What is heading vs gps and compass heading?

For the compass activity datafields, I understand what GPS and compass heading are but what about the plain ‘heading’ one? On a related note, it would be nice to have simple direction (e.g., N, NE, E, etc) as a datafield also

  • My understanding based on the Connect IQ API documentation:

GPS heading: direction of travel based on GPS, should technically be called GPS track I think

Compass heading: where the device is pointing based on the internal electronic compass

Heading: GPS heading when moving, Compass Heading when stationary

I'll have a look at your datafield request when I have a moment. Shouldn't be too difficult to do.

  • Thanks. There is a Connect IQ datafield already (Compass Point Heading) but the font size is smaller than the other datafield fonts and I think this should be native

  • There's a concept of "best source" here. where things can change.  Consider if you are standing still and looking at your watch, as you turn, you'll see compass data, but once you start moving, your arm will likely be at your side, or if you're looking at it, it will use GPS to show which way you're going, not necessarily which way the watch is pointed.  I've never heard exactly when this switch occurs, but it's moving vs not moving.

In CIQ, you can access the raw compass data at all times though, but again, it will be a bit odd if your arm is by your side vs looking at it

  • Contact the developer.  Maybe the font size can be changed.
