Heat acclimation and wrong temperature in Garmin Connect.

Today I did a threshold test and it was sunny and 32°C (89°F). Garminconnect shows in the page of the satellite map 13,9°C (57°F). Now i'm not so sure that heat acclimataion is working properly. I know it uses data of meteo station nearby, but if it is using 13,9°C it's wrong!

  • Thanks to a fellow User in (https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-6-series/228595/fenix-6-series---9-94-beta-release/) I just found out how to exactly find out which weather station has been chosen for the activity.

Well, for an hike which started approx 1200m, up to the summit 1700+m, it chose a "nearby" station located at 249m above sea level. That is pretty much 1/7 of the altitude. Low hill versus mid mountain. That to me matters much more than the color of the paint on the Tempe sensor.

  • It's the same error that Garmin is making in all my province. A weather data provider gave the same error, reporting for my town a temperature about 15-20°C lower than the real temperature. It seems that they use a weather station in a mountain near my town, but my town is in a valley only 200 m over sea level so it has completely different temperature than the weather station in the mountain. Unfortunately there is no way to fix this issue. Garmin support can't help, they only say to wait for an update of Garminconnect. And the user can't choose, as Labronico says, wich weather data source to choose: it would be a clever move for Garmin.I really don't understand why Garmin doesn't use the data of Yahoo weather service, for example, that are quite accurate, and instead rely on local weather station data that can be wildly inaccurate, for one reason or another.

  • Does anyone know if they solely use temperature in their data gathering?  And not also humidity or dewpoint?  Makes a big difference in how an activity feels to say the least.  And might also explain why they eschew their own Tempe device for the data since it's only temperature there.

    Doesn't mention dew point.

    Humidity is though:

"while heat and humidity force your body to work harder to keep cool and maintain a normal body temperature."

  • Humidity is though:

I know. That's why I posted the link :)  It very well may explain why Garmin doesn't use their Tempe sensor. Looks like we're at the mercy of an accurate weather report.

  • Well I'm glad they're accounting for humidity, as temperature rarely tells the whole story.

  • Well actually the websites says the truth: both heat and humidity affect the body. It doesn’t state, though, that they’re both involved in calculations by the watch.

Moreover, since the temperature for start is totally bogus (taken from totally different geographical area), also humidity would be wrong as much.

I’m pretty sure humidity, which doesn’t appear anywhere on Garmin connect, is not taken into account for acclimation. And it’s very sad, given that I live in a very humid area.

  • Does anyone know how to call up @HermanB?  maybe he can clarify for us.

  • Hi All,
In my case 4th day with temperature above 22 degrees (also confirmed in workout details on the map), watch synced everytime with iOS about 30 minutes before every workout and after every workout no info about heat acclimation. Anyone with the same issue? Last summer time everything was correct.

Update: that's all Garmin. Today I did 5th workout with temperature above 22 degrees and synced iOS as always but with activated GPS on the phone and... Heat acclimation works. But Garmin no where informed that GPS should be activated on the phone during sync of weather data before workout.
