Charger Alternative for 945

I ordered one of these for my 945.  I'm assuming this will work fine provided I use an appropriate charger to plug it into?  This might be an option for some of you that want to charge on the go as well. I tried it on my wrist and it is definitely raised up, but it's "doable" - more so I think than the standard charger cable.

Thoughts?

  • I've previously purchased them and they work great. Charge a Fenix 5 plus, 945 and vivoactive 3. It's a good alternative to the Garmin cable. I've been using mine for over 6 months and no problems yet.

  • I find it unbelievable that after 2 years nobody has come out with a simple angled charging cable for the Fenix/935 line. There are lots of replacement cables in the market but none can be used for charging while running.

  • Agreed, having it stick out straight back as it does also doesn't work that well on a desktop. You'd think Garmin itself would have figured this out.

  • Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been looking for something like this for the new connector since the days of the Fenix 3 aftermarket cradle chargers. Please let us know how it is, including how tight/stable it is when placing/removing.

One thing I’m concerned about is using off-brand charging cables which don’t have smart circuitry to prevent overcharging/heating. Anyone with some technical knowledge on this share some perspective on whether this is something I need to worry about?

  • I don't find it so unbelievable. I suspect the market might be quite small.

If you can find a way to search these new forums that makes some sense, you'll find a number of posts about this together with solutions.

  • I've used this exact charger on a Vivoactive 3, Forerunner 935, and now 945. Works fine and holds securely.

If I have one possible concern: I haven't hooked up an inline ammeter to see how much current it passes. It's just a hunch but I have a slight suspicion the stock Garmin cables are "fatter" and will charge a bit fast due to higher current.

  • Just seems like an odd original design decision .. I can't recall all of the various Forerunners I've had since the 201, but I think almost all of them had some sort of side type charging system, the most recent ones the 310XT and 230 side clamps that allowed you to charge the watch while it was laying flat on the desk. Anyway, I can live with this, but I find inelegant/less than optimal.

  • i have a dock like that since the 935 and it works pretty fine - now also with my 945.

  • Seems to work just fine for charging.  I haven't actually run with it though.

I had the same concerns about "over charging" or whatever but realized it's just a connector, the "wall-wart" is doing the actual charging.

  • It does not worth $10. It costs $1-2 on aliexpress or other Chinese sites. It smells not so good. Wire is not good. It connects harder than original connector.

Expecting L-shaped cable still, without any pod.
