FR 945 crashed and cannot be started anymore

Today after my gym workout I saved the session and did a restart to have stress measurement again. All worked fine.

Now, laying in my bed, I only see the teal rectangle and that's all.

Press and hold light will shut the watch down, but restarting it does not help, still the teal rectangle only.

Need help guys :-))))

  • And in Garmin Web Updater or Garmin Express, the watch is recognized as V02.10 :-) and if I do update, express is telling me: customer service not reachable, and web Updater: update file error...

    And I have 2.50 installed....

how did you do your restarts ? always with the long light button press ?

can you see the watch when connected to a computer

    when yes

    • backup your data
    • clean folder content in ACTIVITY, MONITOR, METRICS, SLEEP, NEWFILES, REMOTESW
    • any large files in folder GARMIN or any files resembling xxxxx.GCD type

    when not

    • Call Garmin Support and tell them about your mishap

    success repairing

  • If you can’t get the watch to boot up from the off state, then you’re only option is to try a forced Master Reset using buttons. Whilst I can’t find the same support page for the 945, the MARQ’s internals should be sufficiently similar for the process described in the link below to work (I’ve also copied the text to speed things up for you). If it were me, I’d just jump straight in to the Secondary Master Reset method described, as that will fully clear any latent issues if at all possible. If that doesn’t work, then it’s replacement device time I’m afraid (probably easiest/quickest done by taking it back to the place you bought it from).

“There are a few instances in which a watch may need to be reset. These include the the following:

    • The watch is not receiving a satellite signal.
    • To restore to factory default settings.
    • The watch is not functioning properly.

Performing a reset will erase some user1 data. Please see Related Content for information on how to back up user data and settings before proceeding.

Learned fitness values, for advanced fitness metrics, including: VO2 max, Training Effect and more will be reset during this process. The watch will need to relearn this data after performing a reset.

    Performing a Master Reset

    1. Ensure watch is powered off2
    2. Press and hold Back/Lap
    3. Power on watch while continuing to hold Back/Lap
    4. Release Back/Lap button once "Reset default settings?"message appears
    5. Select Yes

The reset is successful if the watch finishes powering up and goes through initial setup. Try the steps again if initial setup does not appear. Following the reset, place the watch outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.

If the master reset does not work, another method to reset the watch can be tried. Select the heading below for steps on the secondary reset.

    Secondary Master Reset

    1. Ensure the watch is powered off
    2. Press and hold the Down, Start, and Back buttons
    3. Power the watch on while holding these buttons
    4. After the first beep release the Start button
    5. After the second beep release the remaining buttons

The watch should now be reset.

1User data consists of activity history, waypoints, courses, routes and tracks

2If the watch will not power off, press and hold Light until the screen goes blank. This causes the watch to power off and should only be used when a normal power down is not possible.”

  • I already tried both methods. No chance.... :-(

  • No, cannot access the watch on a PC :-(

  • In which case you are extremely unlucky but will need to get a warranty replacement. I know it’s not much consolation to you right now, but in my last 6 years of closely following the Fenix and Forerunner forums, this kind of ‘device won’t boot up’ malfunction is very rare.

Edit: just to also add, it’s also very rare for me to say go straight to needing a warranty replacement rather than see if Garmin CS can help; but what you describe is simply terminal with the tools a consumer has at home, so replacement device is the only solution.

  • Before you send in your watch for replacement, please also consider the following: let your watch fully discharge while the Garmin triangle is shown. This might take a while, but well...

Then, once the screen turns off by itself, connect your watch to a computer running Garmin Express, do not switch it on by a button press, just connect the cable. The watch should turn on now by itself. Wait and see if it would boot now. If not, your watch somehow did the impossible: it corrupted the bootloader which usually is static and can't be changed. In that case, a replacement by Garmin would be the best way forward.

Anyways, please get in touch with [email protected]  they might be interested to analyse your watch how that could happen after all.

  • OK, FR945 completely empty since 3 hours. Connected to Garmin express. Powered up, and... Same error :-((((
