Running Profile 3D Distance and 3D Speed

Anyone uses 3D Distance and 3D Speed here?

The Altitude difference of my normal daily 6km course is about 15 to 20m with 1 big hill ascending about 25m and 300m long, and the rest is nearly flat...

Any advice?

Best regards,

Marco

  • I have it activated on my watches because I do a lot of elevation gain in my running. I do it because I'm aiming for the best accuracy I can obtain. I'm not exactly sure what advice your looking for, sorry. If you're wondering if it makes sense to use I would suggest running the same route for a few weeks with both activated then do the same thing with both deactivated. Then compare the results. You can also plot a course to see what the actual elevation gain of the route you're running is. Hopefully this helps you decide if it's worthwhile or not.

  • What’s the difference between having it on vs off?

  • If you are running 6km on a flat course with only 25m hill on a 300m slope, forget about it.

If you want, you can to the math yourself: Calculate the hypothenuse of a triangle with cathetus of 300m and 25m. This is the "error" you are compensating with 3D Distance.

The watches messaure the distance projected on a flat map, not taking said errors into account. If you are doing a lot of fast ascends/descends, it makes sense. Running trails in the Alps would be an example, paragliding or biking in mountains.

  • I run, bike, and ski in the mountains of Colorado. Any down side to me having it on all the time? Even for flatter sections with minimal ‘error’ of 2D distance, even if not absolutely needs.do, any downsides?

  • Im not shure. It depends on the precision of the altimeter Data. If this used GPS height, it can be really bad.

I dont know how the errors are on flat workouts, just wanted to explain how it generally works.

I got it enabled for hiking in the mountains, running and biking in the iron flat Rhine bassin (did 8km with only 6m+ today) don’t need it. It’s another point of failure I want to circumvent.

  • ok, thanks, thought so too ^^
