Heat acclimation

So we’ve had a fairly mild spring here and prior to today had only 2 runs with my 945 that were over 71f and the heat acclimation was at 17%.

Today I ran an HM and the temp at start time was probably around 68f, although the temp shown for the run by Connect is 63f, but quickly rose into the mid-70’s. Afterward my heat acclimation remained at 17%.

This seems to be a flaw with the way this feature works, or maybe my understanding of it. Many runs can have a rise from below the threshold temp to above it, and also there’s a good chance that the temp that Connect receives might be accurate. My watch had been been connected to my phone the entire time so it’s not a matter of it using outdated info.

from Firstbeat might have some insight?

  • I'll pass this one on to our development team, but I suspect you might be right regarding the fact that it is exclusively looking at the conditions at the start of your run.

  • Thanks for the response Herman. I think it's a great feature, in concept, but was a bit disappointed with the way it worked in practice yesterday.

Usually I run in the evening so Connect will have seen a higher temp prior to my workout. But when you start talking about races HM and longer that will usually at 7:00-7:30 AM to minimize the heat it won't be unusual to have them start where the temp is just below the threshold for the acclimation feature with the rest of the race well above.

Even long runs during the summer for most marathoners I know will start that early if not earlier and could have the same effect on this feature if that's the way it works.

  • Good feedback, happy to pass that along as well.

Here's what I was told: To update your weather data during a run, your watch needs to be paired with your phone. Weather updates aren't continuous, but the are updated a few times each hour at regular intervals. That said, the specific situation you described 68 -> mid 70s may have been right on the edge of everything.

Also, based on what I know, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that the feedback you've gotten is correct. Very hard to say.

  • Thanks again for the response.

Interesting to hear that it will update as long as there is a phone connection which answers my question about rising temps during the course of an activity.

I was paired to my phone the whole time. But it can only act on the data it was given and if the temp numbers my phone was getting were marginal then there's nothing it can do in that case.

  • A couple of question about this great potential feature:

    1) Should I keep paired my deviced to the smartphone DURING a run activity in order to have the heat acclimation feature taken in to account by my 945? Or paring the device BEFORE start a running activity could be enough?

    2) what happens if I start a run activity without pair my 945 to my smartphone ? Will  however the device take in account the heat acclimation? if so, which is the source of wheater data? GPS?

    Thanks a lot

    Danilo

  • You don't have to keep the watch paired to your phone during the activity. But as Herman said above, if it is it will receive periodic updates based on the nearest weather station. It's never been clear to me how the mobile app determines which weather station to use but it's likely using a database and the phone's location features.

As long as you've had your watch and phone paired within the previous 3 hours it will use the last weather information from your phone to determine whether or not to apply the heat acclimation to your activity. But as what happened to me when I started this thread, if that data is incorrect the feature won't work.

  • thanks for the quick response. So, Should I open the Garmin Connect App once a pair device within 3 h before start a running activity? If so, Should I open/activate any feature within the App to make the device to record the latest weather data?

I discovered if I connect my device via wi fi it doens't update the weather data. Can we suggest to add wi fi connection as a possibilitiy to do this?

    thanks

    Danilo

  • hi  do you know what do that % value in heat acclimation exactly describes ? e.g.: what is the difference from a 15% and a 35 % ? thanks, Danilo

  • WifFi on these watches isn't like it is with your phone or laptop. It's not in operation all the time but instead only connects when it has been asked to perform a task like syncing with Spotify or uploading an activity.

I guess it's not impossible for it check for WiFi before updating from the phone, or check for WiFi if a phone connection isn't found.

  • How do I see my Heat acclimation?  I went for a few runs now where the temp was over 71F - but do not see that I received any special extra info?  And what exactly is heat acclimation giving me that is useful in my training?  Thanks!
