Heat acclimation

So we’ve had a fairly mild spring here and prior to today had only 2 runs with my 945 that were over 71f and the heat acclimation was at 17%.

Today I ran an HM and the temp at start time was probably around 68f, although the temp shown for the run by Connect is 63f, but quickly rose into the mid-70’s. Afterward my heat acclimation remained at 17%.

This seems to be a flaw with the way this feature works, or maybe my understanding of it. Many runs can have a rise from below the threshold temp to above it, and also there’s a good chance that the temp that Connect receives might be accurate. My watch had been been connected to my phone the entire time so it’s not a matter of it using outdated info.

from Firstbeat might have some insight?

  • for the past several weeks i have been at 100% acclimation, and over the past 5 days the temperatures on my runs have been between 75 and 85 degrees yes my acclimation dropped to 17%, why would that happen?

  • Are you sure your weather widget is getting updated appropriately?  The heat acclimation relies solely on that, not the tempe or watch temperature.

  • I am not sure, how would i check to ensure the weather widget is it getting updated?

  • add the widget if you haven't already, and then scroll to it to make sure it's showing weather information.

  • Is it a percentage of how much the average person can adapt their physiology for hot climates?

I have similar experience of this feature being inaccurate. I live in northern Australia. We have had a spring heat wave for more than 3 weeks. My runs and rides are in the 29-38C (85F to 100F) range and 70-40% humidity, and I rest and recover in 95F temperatures at home. I have run, cycled or swum every day for the last 10 days. Yesterday I cycled for 3 hours in zone 2 in hot weather.

My heat acclimation is at currently 10% according to Garmin. This is nonsensical.

  • It takes time for fitness data to learn about you. Give a few more weeks.

  • Make sure you sync your watch with your phone shortly before your run/ride. The heat acclimation calculations are based on FORECAST temperature, so you need to get an up-to-date forecast onto your watch.
