Current pace smoothness

Take a look at the attached graph. Both per second recording. Same run. One is current pace from my 945 with GPS + GLONASS (displayed as speed in kph here) and the other from a Stryd foot pod with Speed=Always so taken from it.

The one that is a lot smoother may not be the one you think it might be :)

Looking at other runs on my 945 they also display similar smoothness. Do your runs if you have one yet?

Conclusion if you want a nice smooth current pace, the 945 without any "accessories" may well do you. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1480359.png
  • Can you compare it with instant pace of Garmin 935? Is it more smooth? Do you find it reactive enough (I see a small delay compared to Stryd)? Did you test it also in difficult environment (trees or building)?
  • Have to admit not done a lot of analysis yet and current pace is only a metric glance at from time to time. That said glancing at the graphs from other runs then also look smooth.
  • Isn't this meaningless without us actually knowing what you did ? The red line looks fairly smooth, the blue is far too smooth. Look at about the 20min mark - there is a slight drop in pace, and it picks up again. The blue line lags. For me, red line is far more useful, and is more likely to have been accurate at any single point in time.
  • Agree. I'd much rather have the running pod pace than the smoothed GPS pace.

    OK, here you go https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3627843784

Not very exciting - just a fairly easy mostly road run near where I live made up of small loops which is largely why thought just posting the run itself was of limited use as you can't see the relative pace smoothness.

The main point is that lots of people used to complain current pace by GPS was too jumpy to be usable, maybe now it is not jumpy enough?

I used to use lap pace mostly to give me an idea of my pace but this shows I can probably just use current pace. Personally I prefer to know I am in the ballpark for pace than a constantly changing figure even if that is "correct".
  • As long as current pace is responsive to changes - which we have seen it is - the current way instant pace is being displayed, is the right way.

Is just plain solid - perfect!
  • Beautiful track. I was in doubt because now there is the Fenix 5s+ on sale, but I will buy the FR945 because instant pace is smoother, even if now it costs more than the Fenix 5s+. Now I usually run with two fields, instant pace of footpod Runscribe and lap pace. When I will have the FR945 I probably will run with two fields, instant pace of Runscribe to have a reactive pace and instant pace of 945 that is smoother. Probably I won't need lap pace anymore. Personally I prefer a smooth instant pace, I don't like when it's too reactive or too jumpy.
  • Interesting comment of Meste7 in the thread of the "Marq" (that we can consider brother of the 945) called "Owners Club". I report the two posts:

First post: "My first activity with Marq Expedition. I can say that GPS was ok but the instant pace was way much better than Fenix 5 - I did a constant pace run and that is shown in the pace graph as with F5 I was getting fluctuations for instant pace.

    So, overall looking good.
    ""

Second post: " There is definitely some smoothing on the instant pace which Garmin does vs what GPS pace is recording, which is not a bad thing.

Check Garmin link https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3634445718 and then check ST link which shoes pace from GPS

  • I’ve been using the Simple Avg Pace data field set to 15 seconds pretty much since it came to the CIQ store. It would be nice to free up a CIQ field if the instant pace is steady enough without it. I might run the native pace alongside the 15 second avg for a couple of runs to see.
