I use spotify so i just held down the down button to bring up the spotify menu. Once I select a playlist, I am asked which headphones to use (I have a few paired to the watch) I also had the option to add new headphones. Once I select that I put my airpods into pairing mode and the watch finds them. When you say your watch just crashes, can you be more specific as to when it crashes?
Well, to answer my original question, I’ve been also using my original AirPods with the 945 and have no issues at all. They work great!
I had the watch start "crashing" when trying to play music this morning, weird connectivity, wouldn't start music etc. Traced it back to a Connect IQ app I installed last night called "Battery Widget" - once I uninstalled the app (different than removing it from menu) through Connect and powered the watch off and on , everything came back to normal - have been able to reproduce by installing again, so if you are experiencing errors I would check what other Connect IQ apps you have installed and perhaps start from scratch on the watch.
Garmin, come on, fix this. You make great products but you need to solve issues faster. There is clearly a bug, why should the watch freeze and need a restart because it's not able to connect to a bluetooth headset? Support us that believe in you!
Also, what a great thing having "Apple people" with airpods wanting to use a Garmin watch instead of an Apple Watch!
WORKAROUND:
I was getting the same watch-freezing error trying to pair Garmin Fenix 5 plus with Airpods 1st gen.
Here is the procedure I followed to finally be able to use my airpods:
I have not had any problems with the airpods with my 945. I had more problems with getting the music widget to work but all great now.
