FR 945 - Kcal BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) increased

I have noticed my daily KCAL have gone up with 945. More specific; it's BMR that has increased (from 1456 to 2028 = +572 kcal) - the low number coming from Fenix 5S+.

Could it be related to the new v6 Vo2max calculations? I'm very much focused on my diet and although Garmin is not directly linked to my foodplan, a difference of 572 kcal is worth analyzing. I'd say that if I increase my intake with 572 kcal, I would definitely gain weight, though acc. to 945 I should be in equilibrium...

Has anyone else noticed that?

  • Hmmm...

Quite interesting.... I just checked (a danish) webpage about calculating BMR. Acc. to that site, I'd would need 1997 kcal for BMR. Much closer to the number from 945 (compared to F5S+) - which I guess takes a whole lot more factors into the calculation.

That is 24/7 HR, steps, training, training load, body balance etc. So in theory, 945 should be VERY accurate about that, right...?

  • It sounds like you might have one of personal stats set up wrong for your F5S+. I don’t think your Vo2Max reading has much to do with the MBR that Connect displays. It’s more about your height, weight, age, and activity class.

i would think that all Garmin devices linked to your account would draw from the same source in Connect but it not we’ve never seen situations where changing something in once place the the Garmin ecosystem doesn’t propagate throughout.

I’m 6’ tall, 158 lbs, and 55 years old and have my activity class set to 5. Garmin has my MBR as 2011 which seems to have been a good number for me for several years.
  • Yeah I think you're right. I just checked GC and all stats looks good. Can't tell if that was the case for F5S+ since it's sold and removed from GC.

    My BMR is = 1,549 Calories/day at 50 year 175cm tall 70kg according to this https://www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html
  • I just tried your link too. Mine is lower according to that one too. Never the less - ind the end of the day - both watches do say the same amount of kcal. I have noticed that after having used 945 a few days.

But I like that fact that 945 uses Firstbeats Kcal calculations. Actually there's only a handfull of newer Garmin watches that does that. I guess it's because it's all "connected" to the overall picture; that is OHR, Body balance etc...

    It's all good I think :-)
