Is this the end of the 945 LTE ?

Hello,

It's been months since the watch has received any update. Whereas other models from the same generation have.
Garmin makes no mention of its strategy regarding LTE technology. And no equivalent has been released for years.

Have you abandoned the product ?

  • 17 days, no comment. So yes probably. 945 LTE is listed on the US website as discontinued. In the last 2 or 3 quarterly updates, it was skipped for new features. So I guess they will do some stability updates if necessary, I would not expect more. (would like more though)

  • I moved to a 965 a year ago in March 2024. I was motivated by the 965 screen and features, and that updates slowed or stopped on the 945.  I have been very pleased with the 965 and have had no issues. I exercise every day and get 700+ intensity minutes per week.

I was very pleased with my 945 LTE. I bought in late 2021 for $600. I got a lot more updates than I thought I would with some nice features added. The 965 has also gotten about every update that went to Epix and Fenix which is great.

At this point I would wait until May to see if a 975 is released. It will have the new UI of the Fenix 8 which I'm not sure I want.

i think the 965 is reduced in price so a good buy. It probably won't get a lot more updates but the software has everything I need now. When I put my 945 next to the 965 the screen looks so small and dim.

  • For my part, I received an update 3 days ago (I'm subscribed to the beta program).
The watch was released in 2021 and I'm completely satisfied. I've received regular updates. I haven't noticed any bugs in use. I use it daily for running and walking. I also use the sleep and VFC data.
I do 4 to 6 trail races a year, including one ultra (about 45 hours of running), and to this day I can't see anything missing from this watch.
On the other hand, I find the LTE function completely useless, as it is very limited. As far as security is concerned, I don't need it because I always run with my phone.
For the same reason, I don't use music on the watch any more, as it's easier to stream from my youtube music account on my phone.
As for battery life, I did the UTMB last year and recharged the watch quickly at the halfway point in 10 minutes, which was enough to do the whole race (I'm slow, I did about 46 hours).
Now I'm thinking of buying a 975 because I have trouble seeing the small characters on my watch. Maybe the AMOLED screen will be better for that. Although I do want to see if reading in sunlight is ok on an AMOLED screen.

To tell the truth, I don't need anything new on my next watch and I wouldn't spend 800 US on a Fenix, for example, which won't bring me anything new and useful.
For running, I always use a heart rate belt and a Stryd sensor. I don't see the point of the ECG and I wouldn't use the microphone.
In short, the only reason I'm buying a 975 is out of consumerism, using the AMOLED screen as an excuse :-)

What I'd like to see on the new watch is emergency messages sent by satellite, without depending on the GSM network. Because I'm often in the mountains and if I don't have a GSM network, the only other option would be to get an expensive Garmin InReach.

On the other hand, the only thing that could push me out of the Garmin ecosystem would be access to new features via a paid Connect+ subscription. Then it would be good-bye to the brand if you pay close to US$1,000 for a watch and get the new functions for a subscription fee.

  • Tercier, curious about what beta version that would be: is it later then the 17.30 regular  version currently ?

  • I think it was the Time Zone update.

  • I've also noticed that the Forerunner 945 LTE hasn't received any updates in a while, which raises questions about its future support. It would be nice if Garmin could clarify the situation, especially for those who are still using this watch.

  • I'd be specifically more interested in the long term LTE subscription support.  That's the main feature I use with this watch (until another option is available).
