Slow development?

Hello fellow 945 LTE users, having owned previously different Fenix and Forerunner models it seems that the BETA firmware development on this particular watch is slow, is it just me? I swear when previously using the Fenix 6 the firmwares came very often bringing fixes and new features. I'm wondering if this has to do with the 945 LTE being the first such device and it needing additional work because of the LTE part of the device.

  • According to DCrainmaker, Garnin plans to backport more features to the 945LTE than to the F6/945, like real time stamina and phone based config. Let´s hope that that just takes more time. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/01/garmin-fenix7-7s-7x-in-depth-review.html/comment-page-1#comment-3999561

  • Just out of curiosity, what does the 945 do that the 945 LTE doesn’t do? Especially considering that the 945 LTE is considered to be the most “up to date” tech wise?

  • The 945 LTEs main distinctions are it's next gen heart rate sensor and processing power equivalent to the F7.

There's many little improvements throughout the features and system of the watch that are shared with the OG 945 but they're not enough to worry about.

Scrolling through songs is faster on the LTE there's no lagging. I hope they put more features on the watch to take advantage of the faster hardware.

  • So it’s better than the 945? If so, why does it make sense to assume that it’s “abandoned”? Sounds to me the 945 LTE is ahead of its time. Btw when I asked what’s the difference I was trying to figure out what the 945 does that the 945 LTE doesn’t do that warrants the complaints that it’s somehow forgotten about. Not trying to sound rude, I’m just trying to figure out how a device that’s literally years ahead of its competition is getting so much heat. I’m asking as a 945 non LTE user, which in my opinion is still the best running GPS device available.

By the way I understand that one persons experience can be different from the next and there’s always the possibility that you’ve received a faulty unit.

  • The 945 came out in 2019 and the LTE 2021 and there's many bugs on the LTE which haven't been fixed yet that don't exist on the 945 OG for example holding up to scroll through music brings up the system menu, same when panning in maps. The maps are buggy too when panning and zooming.

I wouldn't say it's abandoned yet, I'm sure Garmin will release software updates unlike the 645.

People are worried it'll be another 645 which never recieved updates like the 245/945.

  • I think the beta releases for OG 945 recently (last week?) has nearly all changes the 945 LTE has not seen and is some cause for believing the LTE is somewhat forgotten.

Add this to various bugs and “unpolished” behavioral items / UI issues / features noted in the manual that don’t match reality (i.e. battery saver screens) going on 4 months further complicates the situation.

Maybe we’ll all be surprised and be given a big update with significant adds soon (significant due to time it has taken to get it out)… or maybe we’re at an “end of life” level of updates.  Time will tell.

  • I think that there's a lot of unnecessary bad publicity around this. The OG 945 never received as many updates as the F6, unlike the 935 and the F5 which seems to have been an exception. The 945 LTE has all the bells and whistles, and even more. Not having an update for 3 months is not making anyone run slower. Garmin is working on a fix for battery life and will back port features like stamina. They will probably fix existing bugs at the same time. Get a Polar and see what slow software updates are: roughly once a year.

  • Polar Vantage V2: 5 updates 15 months.

Forerunner 945 LTE: 2 updates in 9 months

Who is slower? Anyway, V2 has less features than FR945LTE

The FR945LTE owners, more than improvements, want bux fixes. I don't want fancy upgrades (stamina, boby battery, sleep...I don't care). I only want the battery live that Garmin says in the manual (and Run Power directly in the watch if they give us this feature in the future Slight smile)

  • In all fairness, the VV2 updates were nothing more than cascading features from the Grit X line. I had a VV1 in 2019, and got a single update in 12 months. Polar, unlike Coros or Garmin, rarely updates or brings new features to existing models.

Agree with you regarding the 945LTE battery life and the missing battery saver features. I have been told twice by support that a fix is coming.

  • Yes, to reiterate, I'm generally happy with the 945 LTE. While it has now been superseded by the Fenix 7S Sapphire in my mind, it has almost all of the same features in a lighter package.

I don't think Garmin has any obligation to backport features from newer watches, so them going to the trouble of making the watch fully configurable through GCM like the Fenix 7 in the future is a nice suprise. I only feel that most bugs regarding advertised features and normal operation should be addressed quickly, particularly if said bugs weren't present at launch.

While this thread might have started off with fears that the 945 LTE would turn out to be the next 645, we've been comforted with assurances that updates with fixes are indeed coming. Which bugs are fixed when, if at all, remains to be seen of course. It has also occured to me that not all watches exhibit the same behaviour, where both support and the development team might fail to reproduce what you're seeing, in which case a replacement watch could be offered (I declined). It also seems that if you want a bug to be addressed, you're better off creating a support ticket than posting about it here. I've been happy with the answers I've recieved.
