Down button activates backlight?

this is really strange to me. even though i have backlight off for "while not doing activity" for button presses and gestures, pushing the down button to pull up the widgets activates the backlight. does everyone else's watch did this?

this not how my 935 functions.

small thing that probably uses up a little extra power, but i'm wondering if this is a software bug or new design element.

  • I can’t comment how the 935 worked, I’ll trust you :)

Any button press on my watch face seems to turn on the backlight (up, down, back or start).  Of course the light button also does as expected.

Agree it seems to likely use more power, not sure if I have strong feelings one way or the other.

  • I am guessing yours is set to be on for any button press. I set that to off and only the down button (lower left) activates the backlight. The other three buttons don’t activate the backlight. I think this is a bug.  It maybe it doesn’t really matter for real world battery performance.

  • Huh, I’ll check for the setting, didn’t even realize I could choose Slight smile. Thanks for teaching me something new today!

I just changed “keys” to after sunset (it was “On”) and now it seems to work as expected (including down not activating the backlight).

I am running the 3.04 beta FYI.

  • I wonder if it's fixed in the beta? I am swapping out the current unit I have (2.10 FW)  in a couple of days [2nd unit coming in the mail to hopefully give me a watch with better buttons) so it's probably not worth the effort of installing the beta just to see if this problem is fixed. yet your post, gives me hope)

  • I have a similar issue in that the Heart Rate widget activates the backlight. Scrolling through the widgets, either up or down, when the Heart Rate widget appears, the backlight goes on. This is with the backlight set to Off or After Sunset.

Also, button pushes within the Heart Rate widget activate the backlight. Perhaps your Heart Rate widget is visible when you press down from the watch face?

    I'm on 3.05 beta.

  • I think you are right. It’s the heart rate widget. Have you submitted a ticket with Garmin support?

  • Yes, I submitted a report to the beta team.

Unrelated, but I also noticed that “Sleep Time” and “Low Battery Alert” are missing from the Power Manager -> Battery Saver settings. According to the owner’s manual, these options should be present - https://bit.ly/3dMsERP

Does anyone have those options present? Hopefully they’ll be back in the next update.
