buttons: tactical feedback weird...

so, i know this is pretty subjective, but what are people's general opinion of the buttons on the 945LTE?

my unit arrived today, and I'm finding them a bit meh. and nothing like i've experienced on my 935. the best way i can describe the buttons on the 945LTE as a bit "rattle-y" when i push move them, they give me feedback and work but it feels like they don't have a single click. it's almost like a semi-stick clickety-click feel.ie, there are multiple levels of "feedback/contact."

in comparison, when my 935 is performing at it's best, it gives a satisfying single click. when its at its worst, its a mushy push which doesn't offer any feedback.yet, it always works fine.

i'd love to hear if others are encountering this or there is a lot of unit to unit variability.

thanks!

  • My down button is mushy. It’s not a clear crisp click. Instead it feels like the spring inside the button is old and wore out and is too loose. It makes me feel like the button will fall out or dislodge someday.

  • thanks for sharing. most of my buttons feel that way. after using one for a while, it gets better but your description matches my experience. it's just not a "smooth" click which i would expect. on my 935, most of the time it's a single firm click.

i may hit up Garmin support chat tomorrow to get their thoughts. not sure they will want to send me another unit or wait and see. (ie, maybe things will get better in time).@rurunruntm, how long have you had your watch? has it gotten any better in time?

  • My down button is also "mushy" but it works every time so I'm not sure Garmin would consider replacing it. There are a lot of past posts in the 945 forum about buttons having different levels of mushiness, so this seems like an ongoing issue that wasn't necessarily resolved with the 945 LTE.

  • i know i'm splitting hairs, but i'd be curious if we are all talking about similar things. between my two watches, the 935 and 945lte, i'm experiencing 3 things (using my own words)

    1. single tactile click: smooth push with a noticeable click feedback (not really audible but felt) (935)

    2. mushy button : push button in and it registers but no felt click (935)

    3. rough click: as runrunruntm notes: it feels like an unlubricated spring...there is some tactile feedback but it gives me the feeling something may break in the future or leak (945lte)

  • Update: as i mentioned above, Garmin wanted to check out my first watch so they sent me a replacement 945LTE. this 2nd unit is a huge improvement over the first one. on all buttons a distinct single click and smooth operation when a button is pressed. i only sense a hint of the feeling i had on the first unit if i happen to push the button from the side (ie, not evenly distributed pressure across the button). i'm glad i did the swap. i was a little anxious that i was going to experience the same thing on the 2nd watch, but this one is good. if any of you are experiencing less than great button feel, you may want to hit up Garmin Support. they made the process smooth and pretty quick.

  • As a follow-up, I also ended up sending my first watch back to Garmin for an exchange and my replacement 945 LTE buttons are much better as well so I wouldn't hesitate to contact Garmin if you're experiencing what  describes.

Edit: after a few hours it seems as though the Start/Stop button has the same double click issue. Not sure if I want to wait another 2 weeks for the exchange process with Garmin.

  • What I don't understand is why Garmin just doesn't steal the button mechanisms from the fenix.  I had a 5 and those buttons were perfect.  It's not like the Forerunner 9xx series are cheap watches... c'mon guys.  My 935's buttons sucked, my 945's buttons suck, and I can't believe they still haven't fixed this.

  • Does anyone else's have a double click type feeling on the START/STOP button. I can essentially soft-click mine (causing the little outline of metal to disappear) but then have to push harder to feel the deep click and have it register on the watch. It's visually a different design than the other 4 buttons and wondering if maybe it'll go away with use.

  • my start/stopon my 2nd watch is not as smooth as the three lefthand buttons which have a distinct single click. my back button (on the right hand side) is smoother than the Star/Stop, but has an occasional "2nd click" when used. while they aren't perfect, the two righthand buttons are an improvement over my first watch which was awful for all of the buttons so i am going to live with this unit.

  • Thanks for the reply, sounds quite similar to my second unit as well. I'm glad my left side buttons work better as I find I use them more often and I'll likely just live with the double-clickiness of the start/stop as long as it still functions
