Pace way different between two people with 935's

My friend and I both have 935's. We run together, and except for minor distances when one of us goes ahead for a short time, we mostly run side by side.

Yet after we upload our runs to Strava, her pace is almost 30 seconds faster than mine - yet, like I said, for almost the entire time, we are running side by side.

Doesn't make much sense to me - what would cause that?

  • Do one of you have autopause on and the other autopause off? Although Strava filters out pauses anyway.

What distance and time does strava report for both runs?

Strava only filters out pauses (actually, periods where you're moving very slowly or standing still) if you don't pause your activity at least once.

EDIT: the threshold for moving during running activities is 30 minutes/mile.

  • What about Garmin Connect - do your activities have the same time/pace/distance there?

  • I am using Auto Pause and my friend is not.

I have Auto Pause set to pause when my pace goes below 18 min/mile (that is, pause when stopped or walking).

She pauses manually, and she usually does not pause during walking.

So it would seem to me if she is recording walking also, her pace would be slower than mine, not faster. But that's not what I'm seeing.

I'll have to get some specific numbers. Unfortunately, the grouped runs have scrolled off my Strava feed (it only shows the last 7 days) so I'll have to wait until we run again.

  • I'll have to check that.

You can see more activities by clicking on a specific profile (yours or hers). (You can find her profile by clicking on your profile, then clicking the "people" icon in the upper-left corner, then searching for her name.)

You can also see a bit more data if you use the strava.com website as opposed to the app (although the website works best on a computer or tablet, not a phone.) (If you use a phone to log into strava.com, you have to "Request Desktop website", otherwise you'll be redirected to the app.)

In any case, it would be better to compare the activities in Garmin Connect first, because you would see the data before it's processed by Strava (e.g. to remove pauses).

If she never paused once, and she walked slow enough to go below Strava's moving threshold (which is a 30:00/mile pace), then her pace would be faster in Strava. This would be especially true if you both stopped completely for extended periods of time (and she didn't pause).

  • I am using the website. Found how to get last month's activities.

One example is a run where it was close to the same distance (I ran 0.3 miles extra at the beginning).

    Me:  4.32 mi  Pace: 11:07/mi   Moving Time: 48m 5s   Elapsed Time: 57:28

    Her: 4.02 mi  Pace: 10.31/mi    Moving Time: 42m 21s   Elapsed Time: 50:45

(It did not take me 5m 44s to run the extra 0.3 miles....)

For the time we ran together (4.02 mi) we mostly ran at the same pace. We definitely finished at the same time.

I'm going to guess it's what you described, with Strava filtering out the pauses. When I look at her graph on Strava, her pace never goes below 13:00/mi - and I know for certain she walked/stopped some.

Whereas on my chart, it shows I have dips to 13:44/mi, 13:38/mi and 14:24/mi. This is likely around an auto-pause, which from what you described, means that Strava is counting those for me, but filtering them out for her.

I thought I was being "smart" with the auto-pause enabled - and I may leave it like that - because if I slow or stop and manually pause, more often then not I forget to resume the watch... that's why I use auto-pause!

    Thanks!

  • Thanks!

No problem! I'll also point out that Strava does not filter out pauses for Race activities (for obvious reasons) and for the purposes of determining segment times/paces.
