New max heart rate vs. max heart rate recorded

I completed a 5km run today (not that fast but fast for me - hence the HR) - My watch has recorded and stored a new max HR (197) which I believe to be relatively accurate. However, my watch also recorded a high of 205 in the same run. I’ve attached the graph and it was a bit of a random spike - my question is why it chose 197 over 205…. Is it essentially writing it off because it was such a short spike?

Very annoyed a decided not to wear a CHRM but hey ho!

  • I’m an engineer and I know that i f you use the same algorithm on the same data you get the same results so… At least one of the two things is different but probably both!

Anyway, why do you say that bands only last a year? Both of mine transmit and sometimes even tell the truth :)

Your mileage will vary. I am typically changing my strap every year or about.

Let me put it this way, if you start seeing erratic data from a strap, it could because of movement/adjustments during the workout, the strap being (temporarily or stubbornly) dry or thrown off by static electricity (often worse with windy conditions), the battery being weak, or the strap being worn out.

I am still seeing erroneous spikes of HR data even using a strap, despite knowing the circumstances above, when I inspect my data using software like WK05. That particular software package allows for HR data editing, but it is a refinement rarely needed except when there are significant failures for more than a few seconds.
