Training status change from Run to Cycle, plus load not correct

I am predominantly a runner and swimmer, my watch uses VO2 via running data plus running data to determine the training status. I do an indoor ride once a week (since Jan) however just got myself an indoor bike setup at home (via a turbo).

I have done 2 rides, and after the second ride all my data is now using cycling data instead of running data. My training status has gone to unproductive and is remaining there no matter what I do. My watch is showing my VO2 for cycling instead of running.

I went for a run that had a 204 load but my training bar only added 20. A run of the type like this normally adds a minimum of 150, up to 300 so I am not sure why it now only added 20.

Also, my watch is randomly quoting a cycle FTP reading from 11 January, when my watch seemed to connect to someone else's bike at the time, but is now using this as a primary reading but no way to delete it.

How can I get my watch back to running based and not focussing on cycling and getting the right training load added to my rolling 7 day reading like it was before i cycled 2 days ago?

It's frustrating.

  • My watch is showing my VO2 for cycling instead of running

This should happen if the watch didn't get a VO2 Max running update for 30 days, then it will look at lower priority sources of VO2 Max (biking, walking and on some watches, all day HR analysis).

I went for a run that had a 204 load but my training bar only added 20

I don't understand this. If the watch gave you a 204 load workout, you should:

    - see the 204 bar in the exercise load graph

    - see the training focus bars augmenting by 204, as the load is distributed across anaerobic, high aerobic, low aerobic, if relevant,

    - the acute load will change by another number because there is a time decay effect on that load.

when my watch seemed to connect to someone else's bike at the time

Very unlikely that happened, unless you specficially accepted a new sensor on the watch.

How can I get my watch back to running based

In theory, you just have to go do a qualifying run outside with GPS on, at least 10mn at 70% of HR Max.

  • Thanks so much Etupes25!

I've been on two runs since both have over 70% of HR Max for more then 10min.

I did accept a sensor, I thought it was the bike I was on and didn't know until after it wasn't- my fault, issue here is it doesn't allow you to delete this type of data (Garmin came back to me on that).

Interestingly I do a hard spin class every week and it has never done anything like this with the data, I am guess my turbo is sending other specific information that is more 'useful' to garmin which is why I now have this issue.

Garmin did respond to say I can get the focus back to running, when I got the link with this information it basically said I have to keep doing their recommended workouts. This is not possible as I am an athlete and have my training set by my coach and manager. So thats not really a choice.

It sounds like if I want to use the turbo once a week I am going to be stuck with this issue until my cycling is of a high standard (not that it's completely bad).

I'm so frustrated as everything has shifted cycling focussed 'you training load is based on your cycling vo2 max trend' and my fitness is declining. What's the point of the watch if this is all useless to me, or incorrect tbh.

Garmin have not been any help.

Thanks again for your response, appreciated.

  • Note there is a risk that the 745 behaves differently from my Epix Gen 2 with regards to VO2 Max priorities.

I would expect that, if you do qualifying runs, you will get new VO2 Max run estimates and this will replace the biking VO2 Max which has a lower priority for "overall" VO2 Max.

Are you seeing both VO2 Max being updated in Garmin Connect Web? This is what mine looks like there below. I will get a new VO2 Max estimate tomorrow for running.

I experienced that "alternance" of VO2 Max myself. Last year I recovered from a foot fracture during the summer. As I picked up training again, in August, it was only indoor biking to start with, so my VO2 Max became the biking one. Then, I started running again, and the VO2 Max came back to running.
