Random Elevation Auto-Calibration Mid-Activity (Cont.)

Hello Garmin,

The random auto-calibration software bug hit my run once again today - at the 1h 3min mark, my elevation dropped 45 meters within a half of a second. Before starting the workout, I calibrated the elevation, and all was correct until the drop just after mid-run in the screenshot below. Would it be possible to give an update on Garmin's position here? Has this been looked at or prioritized? Or is this just a thing that now belongs to the FR745? Will the team maybe have time at some point in 2023 to address this or is this more of a 2024 thing? I mean a little bit of official feedback would go a long way here.

Thanks for your continued attention...Jamey S (JS)

  • Dear forum users, FYI about a week ago I took some time to figure out how to downgrade my 745 back to firmware 10.40 – since then I haven't had any elevation jumps during activities and also the overall elevation data shown on the watch during normal usage has been more stable.

This software problem has been around for almost 7 months now and it sounds like it won't get fixed in the nearest future. I don't know what I'm now missing in terms of features and bug fixes after the downgrade, but at least the core functionalities of watch are working. Needless to say, in 2023, such an approach to a general software and user support appears totally off and unprofessional.

  • Error persist, italy 09/02/2023

it's embarrassing that they closed the other post without giving any communication

  • Have the same problem today running near the sea with my forerunner 745

  • 11/02/2023, error persist, this time on bike activity

  • Today's activity. Same mistake. unfortunate.

  • Please share how you did this downgrade. It really annoying to have this random inaccuracy. My FR745 was replaced by Garmin on warranty as a result of this so, it seems they are clueless as to the issue. But I would agree that it appears an introduced issue from around mid 2022.

  •  here are the steps I followed:

    1. download the 11.03 beta package, since it contains the files to rollback the firmware to 10.40 (www8.garmin.com/.../download_details.jsp
    2. follow the rollback instructions. Be aware that rolling back the software means losing all the data from the watch. It's like a complete reset to factory defaults, i.e. a new watch state
    3. at this point, after rebooting the watch the device was really slow and lagging. The only feedback I got was a screen asking me if I was about to reset all the data from the watch but it was rather unresponsive actually
    4. after some googling I've finally found the following trick that worked for me – After turning off the device, Press and hold Action and Back when the triangle logo flickers (about 2-3 seconds after it comes up). Release Action after the first vibration. Release Back after the second vibration. Wait for the device to reset (this can take up to 15 minutes).
    5. The watch then should turn on normally as new. Under System › About you should check your firmware version. Mine is 10.40, GPS 5.11, Sensor Hub 19.09

Of course, you should be aware you're doing this at your own risk.

    Good luck!
