Random Elevation Auto-Calibration Mid-Activity (Cont.)

Hello Garmin,

The random auto-calibration software bug hit my run once again today - at the 1h 3min mark, my elevation dropped 45 meters within a half of a second. Before starting the workout, I calibrated the elevation, and all was correct until the drop just after mid-run in the screenshot below. Would it be possible to give an update on Garmin's position here? Has this been looked at or prioritized? Or is this just a thing that now belongs to the FR745? Will the team maybe have time at some point in 2023 to address this or is this more of a 2024 thing? I mean a little bit of official feedback would go a long way here.

Thanks for your continued attention...Jamey S (JS)

Run-Jan 14 2023

  • I don't know if it's a coincidence or just luck, however, I've noticed that displaying the current elevation on your active data screen somehow could be stabilizing the altimeter. Every recent run I did with this screen configuration came out with a clean elevation plot.

Is anyone interested in trying the same test?

  • Yes, I have had stable altimeter on running activity when data screen shows elevation and GPS elevation during activity. Last weekend elevation dropped when have something else on screen during running activity. Not sure if the same issue with cycling for example as I haven't cycled so much. But don't know if this is a coincidence or just luck.

  • thanks for sharing and for trying this out. That’s pretty interesting although  it may be just a coincidence indeed.

  • The test failed today despite the elevation shown on the active screen.

  • Watches ABC app recorded a drop outside of an activity, had to again manually calibrate the watch.

  • I’ve been seeing this too. Random large elevation jump partway through many activities.

  • Hi Garmin, Hello Other 745 Users,

I did a back-country ski activity yesterday (which always shows the elevation on the current data screen for me) and this did not help. After approximately an hour, the elevation randomly dropped around 80m in a half of second.

I can only attribute this to being an auto elevation calibration happening when it should be disallowed.

    Thanks....JS

  • This happens to me on a regular basis during last months. For instance today I got a clean run, but the last one on Sunday has a drop from 80m (more or less accurate) to -70m (clearly inaccurate)... Seems a very random issue, if it has a pattern I cannot grasp it. Annoying because it did not happen when I bought the watch a year ago, so it seems a SW issue that might be fixable.

As I run mainly at sea level, when this things happens it is always a drop from 50 to 100m, and the watch ends reporting negative altitudes...

       Best,
       Kurt.-

  • today's activity with error

  • I also have this problem on my 745, affects maybe 50% of activities. Have also noticed this occuring outside of activities just by viewing the ABC widget. Garmin really needs to release a statement about this instead of locking the old thread with no updates.
