Swimming and Training Effect and 4w Load Focus

No matter how hard I go in the water, I never get anything more than a negligible anaerobic impact when I swim and therefore, I am always showing an anaerobic shortage in my 4w Load Focus.

Swimming is my primary activity. I swim with a masters group and i know how to push myself. HR zones are set up and accurate based on established running LT minus 10bpm. (I read somewhere to estimate LT for swimming you can take your running LT and subtract 10 bpm). Even if that is not accurate, when I review my time in Heart Rate Zones after a swim, I will often have just as much time in Zone 5 as in any of the other zones...yet little to no anaerobic training effect? What gives?

How can I spend 12 to 15 minutes in Zone 5 and have no anaerobic impact?

My only guess, is that since swimming is mostly intervals, with rest between efforts, this lowers my average heart rate to, say something between 135 and 145 and therefore its discounting the time I spend in Zone 5 and the overall anaerobic benefit...

  • I echo this question ... I swim 3-4x/week with 2 of the swims usually being quite hard ... but the training effect / load results show me as "low aerobic" and thus short on "high aerobic".  I'd like to use Garmin's recommendation engine for picking rides & runs appropriately given the swimming activity, so understating the swim load would be necessary to trust the recommendations.  Any tips?
