Do outdoor running speed calculations rely on accelerometer data?

I'm trying to setup inline skating activity by copying the existing one, and I noticed that pace data doesn't add up to average pace. Also I noticed that if I do long slides(with low cadence or just rolling without leg movement), watches tend to decrease my current speed down to walking speed(for example, I'm rolling at ~18 km/h, watches say that I'm moving at 3 km/h).

Is that true that there's some combination of GPS-based and accelerometer-based speed that is shown as my running speed?
Should I rather copy other activity(biking, for example) than running for inline skating?

  • If you are using a GPS activity, then the pace and distance should be calculated only with GPS data (unless you are going through a long tunnel , under heavy tree cover, etc.).  To be safe, I'd recommend using the "XC Skate Skiing" activity profile as the root profile for copying.
