Forerunner 745 intermittently recording flat elevation. Barometer app doesn't show any changes but test mode shows barometer is working.

Altitude not working on FR745 some of the time. It will work for a few days then will show a flat elevation on a run or walk (all other measures are fine in recordings, just the elevation).

Tried re-calibrating Altitude and Barometer which seems to make no difference.

Used the test mode (power-off -> power-on + down button) and this shows barometer working correctly.

So what I don't know, if the barometer is working, why the altitude isn't - is the altitude based on the barometer, or on a separate sensor (i.e. GPS)?

  • Are you using  runningdf4 data field by any chance, This data field writes to the FIT file and corrupts the data on height.

  • Not using any custom fields, just out-of-the-box settings. Looking at the failed recordings, these seem to have change in elevation for the first minute, then stick on one elevation for the remainder.

Worked today after washing, resetting, general fiddling and allowing the watch 5mins to get GPS etc before starting. Just no way of knowing if it will work or not - which is the most annoying.

  • Hey! I had an identical problem. Maybe it stayed ... After 4 months of using the 745, on foot (running, hiking, walking) activities after 2-4 minutes, the altimeter readings became static. At that time, May 2021, only a full reset helped me. Helped for a month or two. In September, I wrote to support and they sent me a list of procedures for correction (in general, standard procedures that are described in the manual). After disabling autocalibration + rebooting the watch, the altitude recording became correct. From September 26, all activities are written normally. Firmware 5.80.

  • I'm experiencing the same issue. It started about a month ago with my watch.

  • I have elevation problems too. Its way off. Used to be accurate, maybe 1 or 2 meters off but now its like 20 or 30 meters. I tried downgrading 6.09 to 5.80 and reseting my watch but no help.
