Forerunner 745 pace issue

Is anyone else having issues with the 'live' pace (minutes per mile), shown by the watch while running? Mine was spot-on when I first got it, but now it's all over the place when under just the lightest of tree cover. The recorded result seems accurate, but that's not much help when I'm trying to keep a certain pace while running. I tried a Fenix prior and returned it as the pace shown while running was so far off. Am guessing this might be a GPS issue, anyone else seeing this? I'm finding it quite frustrating.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

  • Same here. Thanks for pointing that out!

  • I compared my new 745 to my 645M, The 745 pace speed is updated almost every second, where the645M updates the pacing speed every 10sec or so... And maybe thus balaces out the reading. But ths is just a guess on how the pace calculations differs

  • The live track activity is not exactly like the actual activity as it would show in Garmin Connect. Even when you pause during the activity, movement and tracking is still shown in the live track link. Also, the track and time are still running even after you press stop on your watch. Time is still showing you as moving up until you press save/done. This is going to throw off the pace. I'm not sure why Garmin does it likes this, but it might be so that the person with whom you're sharing the live track can know your exact whereabouts in case you pressed pause and veered off course.

  • I've not tried the live tracking, was just referring to the moving pace shown on the watch face while running. I ran the other day and the watch showed very erratic pacing, varying from about 7:20 per mile to 12:30. This was running on the road and a paved path, so my pace should have been fairly consistent. The 7:20 was likely accurate, as I was on a slight downhill, but the higher readings were way off. Recorded information seemed to be pretty accurate, but as mentioned in my OP, that doesn't help much while running.

  • I have returned mine in exchange for a new one. Lets see if this makes any difference

  • did you return the watch based on the GPS issue, did my local Parkrun on Sat and the pace was all over the place under fairly light tree cover

  • Gamin is super slow in sending out the replacement, they still haven't posted it after 10! days waiting

  • Emailed Garmin support querying whether or not a GPS update is coming. The reason I asked this question is, I went back over old runs with my old 30 and 645 watches and both had better average pace tracking at the tree lined river path, I first noticed a problem with my 745. Interestingly, prior software versions 5.20 and 5.60 looked to be better at average pace rather than the latest 5.80 update.

Also this weekend, at my local Parkrun, a running companion using a garmin 45 who was running along side me for the entire 5k showed better recorded pace, at one point, again under light tree cover, he showed 5-40 pace while I showed 6-20 at the same spot (we both averaged 5-12 for the 5K) at that section my colour was dark blue saying very slow compared to other sections, where as his was a lighter blue, again after that section, my colour was a brighter red as my watch showed a quicker speed to make up for the prior slower averaged pace.

Disappointing to say a 'cheaper' watch the 45 showing better management of pace than a more 'expensive' watch as in my 745.

  • Well, reply from Garmin was a link to GPS Drift which doesn't take into account, how a cheaper watch was getting a stronger GPS signal, over a more expensive watch, during our parkrun.
