Forerunner 745 pace issue

Is anyone else having issues with the 'live' pace (minutes per mile), shown by the watch while running? Mine was spot-on when I first got it, but now it's all over the place when under just the lightest of tree cover. The recorded result seems accurate, but that's not much help when I'm trying to keep a certain pace while running. I tried a Fenix prior and returned it as the pace shown while running was so far off. Am guessing this might be a GPS issue, anyone else seeing this? I'm finding it quite frustrating.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

  • I'm using lap pace next to live pace but i advise you to check your GPS settings and maybe switch smart recording to every second recording and GPS + GLONASS mode to GPS only or GPS + GALILEO. There are plenty of things affecting GPS accuracy so maybe its just temporary thing.

  • Thank you! Will absolutely give this a shot. Cheers.

  • I just posted on this very subject on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/pnjyfd/running_pace_drops_under_trees_is_it_due_to_gps/

my 745 drops pace under some very light tree cover where my older 645 never did.

  • I took a quick look through the thread, seems a common Garmin thing, which is too bad. I'll try a couple of things suggested, but don't have terribly high hopes. Thanks for replying and letting me know, cheers.

  • This has been discussed a lot on Fenix 6 forum. The conclusion is that Garmin switches to a different pace algorithm, which is primarily accelerometer based, when GPS strength is anything less than perfect. The accelerometer based pace tends to be too slow, and Garmin algorithm tends to be quick to drop the pace but slow to recover which makes it way too conservative overall. As a supporting evidence, I was able to affect the live pace on Fenix 6 just by swinging my arms faster while moving at the same pace.

Sadly, it seems Garmin has brought the same faulty algorithm to FR 745. Too bad because I was considering buying FR 745 as a more accurate alternative to my Fenix 6X. Now I won't.

  • I have the same issue. I tried contating support with same auto asnwer all the time... What is worse I have different live pace on the screen, different when I get a prompt that I run out of set pace on the screen and in my earbuds. So in the same second I have 3 different readings... For instance I get very slow pace on the screen like 8:00 min/km and I hear that my pace is too fast lets say 5:55 and on the screen there is prompt fast pace 6:00... it goes away and in data filed I see 8:00. I never had these issues with my 645 Music.

  • Thanks for the informative reply, didn't realize how this all works together. Thing is, the 745 seemed great when I first got it, then it seemed something changed. So far the recorded information looks to be pretty accurate, just what I'm seeing while running can be off, which can screw things up. Appreciate it!

  • That's at ton of variation, too much to sort out. I really hope they can improve this, and soon. If your 645 was more accurate, one would think it shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

  • To be honest I also feel like when I got it I didn't notice pace issues.

  • Same problem here, My 645 music was always spot on, the gps in my 745 is terrible which causes the live pace (and records that are reported by my watch) after a run, to be very inaccurate. The recorded pacing and times seem to be accurate.
