swimming pool temperature

After updating to firmware 5.80, the device does not detect the temperature in swimming pool mode. In running and cycling it's working

The thermometer in Garmin devices was designed to work for the barometer's calculations.  It can read ambient temperature if removed or water temperature while swimming, but in my opinion it did so poorly.  Anyway, another user in the 945 forum was told by support that the latest update turned off the barometer for swimming activities; therefore disabling the thermometer, because the barometer isn't needed while swimming and while left on, the water in the port was causing false altitude/pressure readings.

  • The ability to measure water temperature readings during a pool swim activity was removed in version 5.80. After through testing and investigation, we have discovered that having the barometer-thermometer (a combined electronic part) powered on during exposure to chlorine dramatically accelerates the failure of the part. Therefore to give customers the best experience and product longevity we decided it was very important to make the change to turn off this part during pool swimming.

  • So, by extension, if I'm just playing in a pool with my kids, should I start up a pool swimming activity to help protect the sensor?  Is an hour per month or an hour per week in the pool anything to worry about, relative to aging the barometer-thermometer sensor?
