Firstbeat Sleep

There is a significant change to the sleep tracking with the new 5.2 firmware.

1) A lot of specifics on sleep quality.

2) My sleep tracking in the old software often looked alike, similar readings night after night. This last few days are radically differnent.

Anyone else seeing this?

  • Yes. It's the same with the new software. It was the sleep metrics with FirstBeat analytics that the FR745 was supposed to launch with but was delayed because Garmin weren't happy with how it was performing. From my perspective it is much more accurate than before, the only issue I have is that I have to view it on the watch at least once before the data syncs to the phone and Garmin Connect. In other words it doesn't appear when I first open up Garmin Connect on my phone if I haven't views the widget on my watch - not sure why that is!

  • I will try the "looking at the sleep results on the watch first" technique.

After a week, I am starting to see that all of my sleep results do show up, but it is two or so hours after waking up, it is up in the cloud, before it shows up on Garmin Connect.

  • I found the original F745 Firstbeat Sleep function on my watch was pretty bad.

On the "Quantified Scientist" youtube page, I saw that Garmin sleep is pretty bad. He found that all Fitbits were much more accurate with sleep monitoring. So, I bought a cheap Fitbit 11 months ago and started wearing it at night to track sleep. It does pretty well. I have about six months of solid sleep tracking, and I understand my sleep in a much more profound way (tracking is educational).

With the new F745 firmware update to 7.6, Garmin pronounces that the sleep algorithm is improved and polished. Okay.

I'm going to take off my cheap Fitbit, put on my not-so-cheap F745 with the latest firmware, and give it a week or two of sleep tracking to see what Garmin can now do.

Does anyone else have experience with the new 7.6 firmware update and its impact on sleep tracking?

  • I was able to get two nights results.   It's probably a little better.  I hope to get a good week or two to really see if it is worth relying on.

I under stand REM is the hardest stage to ID, and most trackers overestimate DEEP sleep.  My initial impression is REM is a little under reported, DEEP looks pretty good.
