Using the breadcrumb trail in the 745: autozoom before turns?

Does anyone have practical experience with using navigation on the 745?

I'm thinking about 'jumping ship' from Suunto to Garmin.

On my Suunto Ambit, when I near a turn, the breadcrumb trail automatically zooms.
My wrists are not thick and I like the size of the 745.
The 945 is as huge as the Ambit, which I rarely wear on the wrist.

When I looked in the 745 manual for 'zoom',

at navigation, it seemed to involve button presses.
Since I will mainly use navigation while cycling with the watch

mounted on a handlebar 'wrist', having to zoom with button presses
is not very convenient.

It might automatically zoom, but i can't see that in the manual.

If anyone knows about this and would care to answer,
I would appreciate it.

I can't tell you too much about the navigation. But the first thing is, that the 745 has no maps, and also the zooming and scrolling on the navigation feels a little bit clunky. If you mainly looking for something while cycling, why not consider a bike computer?

Also I found something about auto zoom here: www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-60C3B7A5-51ED-4E4D-A2DC-8578234EF279.html

  • I would NOT use it for cycling.

It's barely sufficient while running. Gives you a vibration just before turning and you check the watch...

945 might be better but havent tried that system on it. Only on the 745

  • Thanks wogi
"Automatically selects the zoom level for optimal use of your map. When disabled, you must zoom in or out manually."
The manually doesn't explain how the autozoom works.
It was really good on the Suunto, which zoomed to about 200 m level when a turn or junction was coming up. A permanent zoom to fit the screen wouldn't be as useful.

My main two activities are swimming and cycling. I can't take a bike computer into the pool with me.
I bought the Suunto because it seemed the best option for counting lengths
and monitoring heartrate (with the SmartSensor HRM) and it had breadcrumb navigation,
which I found quite easy to use.
With clearly readable monochrome LCD, the Ambit 3 Peak was elegant in its simplicity.
Mounted on the handlebar, it was easy to see, and simple button presses scrolled between screens.

  • Thanks for your opinion, Zephillou.
The vibration wouldn't be much use with the watch mounted on a handlebar 'wrist'.
I'm starting to incline toward the 945, mainly because of the better battery life.
Longer time between charges means fewer charges,
so the lifetime of the device should be longer, too.
I think detailed maps are more noisy. OTOH, if you take a wrong turn,
you can confidently find a way back to the route without having to turnaround.
The Ambit 3 Peak is 50 mm across. The 945 is 47 mm and the 745 is 43.8 mm.
The small diameter of the 745 is what really attracted me.
Sleep tracking is useful and wearing a big lump in bed is not what I want to do.
    Happy trails!
