pacing a run

Hello,

A simple question.   I want to run a marathon in about a year. I want to get up to speed and comfortable with using my 745 to track pace.

For instance I want to run a 4:00 hour marathon, or 8:00 min/miles.

What are all the options to use my 745 to practice keeping pace, or monitor pace.

I can't really read my watch very well when running (reading glasses) I can squint and see it if I have to.  I would like a buzz or beep.   I remember reading about this where there is a a "too fast" and a "too slow" range warning.

What are the different ways for having the watch keep me on pace?

  • Oh there definitely are ways. 

    If you have Bluetooth headphones connected it will tell you in your ear so you won't even have to look at the watch. 

    Press the Start activity button,

    scroll to Run but dont select it yet,

    hold the "up" button,

    choose "run settings",

    then scroll and choose "alerts",

    click "add new",

    scroll and choose "pace",

    then you can choose what your "fast" alert is and your "slow" alert is

    I have one setup for my Heart rate so i stay in zone 2, tells me when im out of range and when im back within range.

    I can't see the data screens while running without glasses either.  I have changed them to show a maximum of 2 data fields each, which is big enough for my eyes.  Screen 1 for running is Pace and Heart Rate, so which ever target type you choose, you can monitor it easily.  Also I set the backlight to only come on with arm twist gesture during workouts - this saves battery during the day but makes sure I can see the screen after dusk when running.

    I find that pace and heart rate alerts can become annoying.  They may be wrong for the workout/run session type you are doing and hard work to keep changing each time.  Surely to train for your marathon you won't just keep running at 8 minute miles until you can manage 26 in a row at that pace.  You can use the Garmin Coach feature and activate a marathon training plan with your goal pace set.  I would suggest looking at the plan in Garmin Connect to see how you like the look of it.

  • I was impressed by the "course" feature. Where you set your course and a target pace and they approximate the pace you'll be going for each segment/lap... (i'm going to guess it takes into account elevation) And i can do it all from my phone and send it to the watch. 

  • I also tried this after creating a course and then using "PacePro" to work out the pace of each mile, which as you say takes elevation into account.  Really good.

    Something else for the original question - when you do a run Workout, it automatically adds another run data screen with a pace or heart rate meter (depending on which target type you set) with a large value and an arrow showing if you are within range.  With bluetooth headphones connected you get audio prompts if you are low or high.  The advantage of this is that the target ranges change with each step of the workout (warm up, run, cool down etc.).  Like you say, many ways to monitor and get alerts.

  • You can do a lot of things. Personally what I do is I have all of my workouts programmed in Garmin Connect, (example workout 7:30 minutes, heart rate zone 1, repeat 8 times 15 seconds at 4:30-4:40 pace, 3:30 at 7:00-7:30 pace, 7:30 at heart rate zone 1). Then add them to the calendar. The other thing you can do is go to run, hold the middle left button, then select run settings, then scroll to alerts, in alerts set a pace alert and it will vibrate to let you know if you are outside of your zone. The nice thing about setting them up in Garmin connect is you can set multiple types of alerts for specific points of time.

  • Hello, Yes I use the Garmin Coach and a larger work out plan.  

    Specifically for race day I have time goals, and I want to mess around with the 745 features ahead of time during training, so that at a race I can click on the 8:00/mile pacing feature that I'm already comfortable with.   Probably I'll practice with pace alerts and a range around that and see how it goes.
