Some feedback on the FR 745

Hi,

If that can be useful for people wondering about the FR745, here's a very quick feedback based on my usage of Garmin watches.

I started ~6 years ago with a Vivoactive, as a test for a running GPS watch, then moved to the FR630 6 months later. I basically run once or twice a week, on average, say ~45mn/1h each session, and that's basically it. So, not a big deal. My motivation to have a GPS watch was really to have data and good distance measure for any run. The FR630 was ok, but a bit frustrating as the precision was not that great.

Typically, my current track is around 8,15Km as I measure it on google maps, and the FR630 has been reporting 7,7 or 7,8Km almost everytime. So, frustration adding up, I looked at what would be a better GPS watch, and the FR745 stood out. The price was an issue, and I hesitated 2 months before acquiring it - there are a lot of features that I really don't care about that makes the price (and battery life) not what I was expecting. But after almost 5,5 years, the GPS on my FR630 died and the FR745 is now 50€ cheaper, so I switched.

Using 3D distance and speed, GPS+Glonass and 1" polling, my first run on my track just reported a distance of 8,19Km! Considering that the elevation is estimated to add ~40m based on plain Pythagore math, the watch is nailing it. Very impressive. Zooming at the track on the map, it's almost perfect too, while running in the forest (ok, that's winter and they are cutting many trees atm, but still).

And, just like with the FR630 at the time, when I first thought the Smart Notification feature was useless to finally find it essential, the wrist based heart rate is actually very useful for everyday's activities. I use a HRM belt for running, but I like to have that HR monitoring anytime.

So, if you are like me and what really matters for you is GPS accuracy, I have to admit I'm very positively surprised. That's still an expensive watch for my needs, but I have the feeling at the moment that, at least, I have what I want.

  • Hi thanks for sharing it's great to hear you are happy with the 745. I have the 945 but I am not happy with the GPS accuracy, can anyone confirm if the 745 GPS is a different chip? How is your instant pace on the 745? Mine bounces up and down when I haven't changed my speed which I believe is due to the tracking going off course. Could you share your activity to show the GPS tracks? Yeah they're expensive I get anxious wearing them fearing a scratch but enjoy it you may not want to update it for years unless Garmin come out with some super high accurate GPS chip and a bigger screen.
