Model FR 745 costs more money then Model FR 245 Music

Both models got with Music but Battery mode for GPS without music run only 16 hours for FR 745

FR 245 Music run 24 hours.

Is it misprint from side of Garmin?

Please explain.

FR 745 for GPS mode should be run 24 hours  without music according to logics.

  • Honestly - I didn't find an answer about difference FR 745 (16h) vs FR 245 (24h) Music for GPS mode without music.  But the same battery for those models.

    Could you indicate - where is explanation? Am I missing something? :-(

  • I didn't say there was any explanation. I said that it's not a misprint, and that this very same question has been asked and discussed before.

    Anyway, in that discussion you will find a link to garmin's support site stating that the FR745 can in fact go for 24 hours under some circumstances, which could suggest that perhaps for the FR745 garmin used some more conservative battery estimate than for older models. To put it another way, the 24-hour estimate for the 245 is somewhat exagerated (and hard to achieve in real world), whereas for the FR745 the 16-hour estimate is underestimated (on purpose), meaning that in real world usage scenarios you'll get at least 16 hours.

    But that is just my conjecture. I don't recall garmin ever confirming this.

  • Well, may be you are right. But in this case Garmin should change FR245 battery time in description from 24h to 16h - in this case it will be marketing error from this side.

  • in this case it will be marketing error from this side.

    Are you sure there's an error?

    The 745 is the only Garmin watch that has the newer Sony chipset.  It's also the only Garmin watch using the Sony chipsets that didn't have the major New Year's GPS problem. So I can't say for 100% certainty, but the difference in the two Sony chipset seems likely for the difference in the battery life specs. If this is the case, it doesn't matter if the batteries are identical if one device is drawing more power than the other.

  • Well, it seems your are right.

    FR 245 was made - Apr. 2019

    FR 745 was made - Sept 2020

    This explains the shorter operating time with GPS. But on the other hand, this means that Sony's chipset is more voracious than older chips. But on the other hand, the Sony chipset just saves energy -  https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/e/products/lsi/gps/

    In this case, the 745 model should last longer and the case size is larger than the 245.

    something does not add up here

  • Well, this is just speculation on my part, but this is what I believe happened.  Garmin for the longest time used the Mediatek GPS chipset, but demand was great for more battery life.  To meet this demand, Garmin switched to the Sony chipset which was introduced to the Fenix 6, FR945 and FR245.  A lot of complaints started about this new chipset; not just here, but with Suunto, Coros, etc, who also used the same chipset.  Sony tweaked that chipset and the first Garmin watch to receive it was the 745.  Does the newer chipset use more power, or is the 745 software designed to use more power?  I don't know for sure.  I do know many claim here on the forum that GPS is slightly better on the 745 compared to the older Sony chipsets and it didn't have what many call the New Year's GPS Gate problem.  So, something is different and the specs for the 745 and 245 may actually be correct.  But as I said in the beginning, it's speculation on my part.

  • Looks good for me, thanks for the comment.

    But still there is a discrepancy with the logic of reasoning.

    But I can't understand this graph acc. to Garmin specs. - https://prnt.sc/wz3bgt

    GPS + Music = 6 hours (FR 245 Music, FR 745) - tha same hours

    GPS = 24 hr - FR 245

    GPS = 16 hr - FR 745

    ok, in this case GPS + Music should not be the same = 6 hrs for 2 models coz GPS was run with music at the test time.
