FR745 Pace question

I've just got a Fenix 6 Pro.  The instant pace reading during a run activity swings about quite erratically.  I've done some searching on this and seems all modern Garmin devices have been doing this for a number of years now.

My previous device was a Forerunner 310XT.  The pace on that was rock steady.

I've not found many people reporting wild pace swings with the Forerunner 745.  Is that because it's too new a device to have enough feedback on or is it because the 745 doesn't suffer fluctuating pace readouts?

If the 745 is more stable, I'll return the Fenix 6 and go for a FR745.

Grateful of any feedback.

  • It is not even accurate on my FR945, the only way is to add a foot pod which at the moment are however unavailable, at least here in Italy including amazon, Garmin and Suunto no longer produce them, I hope to find in some time at least that of Zwift which seems to work well and is also beautiful.

  • Yes I've read that the FR945 is not very stable, just like the Fenix range.

I wondered if the FR745 was better as it's a newer watch that might have different chips or sensors inside? I can't find any negative reviews regarding pace on the FR745. Is that because there aren't any issues with instant pace on this device?

  • i've been using the 745 for a while now and find it as a very capable little device. it has marginally better gps tracking compared to the 945 but on the other side - less features (maps for example). you'll find some pace jumps too, but i can live with them on both the 945 / 745 - unless you're really a pro ;-) and need spot on data. also - it has a smaller footprint so it will look balanced on a smaller wrist, like mine ;-)

  • I like "Lap Pace"

  • That is what I personally use as well. The only exception I would say would be for intervals shorter than 400m, and only if I'm on a track.

In this scenario I just have lap timer on. I've gone back and forth between doing 200's using the track profile and letting the watch split itself at the 200 and hand timing them I can't really say that I like one that much more than the other.

However for what is being discussed, lap pace vs pace is kind of a mute point. Whether you are using lap pace or pace, the graph would look the same in the end.

That said, if you are using lap pace as opposed to pace, you probably are less likely to make as many constant changes in your pacing, and end up making your pace graph more smooth because your pace will naturally become more smooth.

  • I tried the Fenix and it didn't work for me, in part due to the issue you mention. I landed on the 745 and while I've only had it a short time, it seems to be more accurate over the couple of runs I did this past weekend. I keep an eye on average pace and HR, and both seemed pretty good to me. In addition, of the three watches I tried, the 745 looks to have the most accurate GPS by a slim margin, and that's not in the most detailed setting. Best of luck, to me it was worth the change for better accuracy and the smaller form factor.
