Can Garmin 745 suggested workouts be sent to edge 830

Hi Everyone,

I have a edge 830 but want to add a watch to get other activities and all day features added.  One thing that looks really nice on the 745 is the daily suggested workouts.  I know it's also coming the 1030 plus but I was thinking if I purchased a 745 and could send those suggested workouts to the 830 that would be awesome and I could add all the watch based features.

Is this possible?T

Thanks in advance!

  • The answer is yes and no. So in the traditional sense, no you can not just send the workout file over. However what you can do is set the watch and the Edge up as an extended display. What would happen is the watch would actually be running the workout, the Edge would just be your heads up display. If you are familiar with how workouts function at all you would see your low alerts and high alerts on the Edge. One thing that does not appear is the workout screen itself, however you can customize what you see on the screens that you do get. By default you will get total time and lap time, (at least I did when I tested this on an Edge 520 Plus and my 745) The next three fields were the fields I saw on my watch. Screen one had distance timer speed by default so screen one on the edge showed total time, lap time, distance, timer, speed. To configure this I changed the screens on my watch to reflect something more in line with what the workout screen shows. I set my watches screen 1 to 10s Power, Speed and Cadence so that when I looked at the Edge it showed Total Time, Lap Time, 10s Power, Speed and Cadence. It does seem the Edge is limited to the 5 data field format as I added more than 3 fields to my watch and the Edge only brought through the first three fields.

  • Hi Brooks,

Thank you for the comprehensive reply.  I suppose the other work around would be to replicate that suggested workout in Garmin connect (or TrainerRoad etc) and send to the edge.  Of course the other option would be to upgrade to the 1030 plus or perhaps the possibly upcoming 830 plus.

    Thanks again!

  • Happy to offer some support!

  • Thanks Brooks,
I think I’ll certainly give that a try.  I’ve previously spent quite a bit of time setting up power based interval sessions on garmin connect for use on the 830, so if this simplifies things then I’m all in.  I was a little worried about which device (745 vs 830) would be controlling the trainer; since I’ve had instances where both my 830 and phone were trying to set the power target on the tacx 2, and solving these IT issues when you are clipped in (and in zone 5) isn’t fun.  So I just switched to only the 830 to keep things simple and avoid any issues.

if you can share any more advice, tips or best practice when using multiple garmin devices at the same time then please do :-)

ps - I purchased the tacx 2 neo before the merger with Garmin, so for me any improved integration or interoperability is just cherries on an already very nice cakes

    Many thanks

    Gareth

  • I will say I did those tests from my desk, I haven't myself tried it from a smart trainer. (I was a collegiate runner, and I'm afraid my road bike is pretty old and isn't compatible with some of the newer trainers). The above would absolutely work with an outdoor ride.  After performing a ride if you could @ me with your experience I'd like to know if that worked the same way as I would expect it to outdoors.

    Yes.  Copy from 745 a file:   \Garmin\Workouts\Guided\cyhrdwr.fit or cypowdwr.fit to Edge \Garmin\NewFiles

    • cyhrdwr.fit - training by HeartRate
    • cypowdwr.fit - training by Power
