Using a measured VO2 max value in the 745?

The Garmin Connect App has place to enter your max VO2 value if you have it directly measured. But is there a way to have the Forerunner use that directly measured value rather than the estimated one it tries to come up with?

  • I'm not aware that the 745 (or FR945, F6, etc) use VO2 max for any computations.  I think it's kind of the top of the food chain.  Other metrics like HR, power, speed are used to calculate it, but I don't think it is used to calculate any other metrics.

What do you think it's getting used for that you are missing out on?

VO2 max is used when it calculates your training load. But the issue is a number of athletes have their VO2 max directly measured via dedicated testing and this number is way more accurate than the inferred one that the watch estimates. My hope was that since Garmin Connect has a place for you to enter a measured value, that there would be a way for the watch to use that. But it's looking like that is not the case.

  • If you edit your VO2max in your profile and then perform a full sync of your watch (garmin express through PC) does that not update the value shown on your watch?  With physio true-up active, my watch was showing the value from garmin connect even before the watch had any data to calculate itself, so it did read the data from garmin connect initially.

Regarding training load I'm really not sure VO2max is an input into training load, I think it is actually using your heart rate info/zones rather than VO2max.  Especially since my partner is using a 830 with heartrate, but without power meter; so she gets a training load calculation, but has no VO2max data.

As far as I understand it I'd agree with ekutter; training load is a measure of how much effort you are putting in (based on heart rate etc), while VO2 max is a measure of how efficient that energy is being used (by comparing input to output).

Best info I can see from Garmin on the different metrics is www.garmin.com.my/.../

Thanks. Yes I tried that, but it doe not end up using that number as the max VO2. Interestingly it does recognize and use my threshold HR, which was manually entered. Guess I'll just need to roll with it!

    Appreciate the feedback
