How do I start and stop GPS tracking so I can save a hike track & stats on my 735XT

Just got a 735XK which I'll be using for hiking. On my Monterra I was able to start & stop tracking so I got only my hike and not my drive home. How do I do this with the 735XT? Can it be done with the app on my Android phone?

  • Download a hiking app in the Garmin IQ store (or create an activity using the run profile). The after scrolling to and selecting the activity, press start (top right button) to initiate the activity and the same button, scrolling to save when completing.

Not necessary. The FR735XT has a built-in hike activity.

Anyway, press the start/stop button to enter activity mode. Press the up button to select an activity profile. In your case select "Hike". If you don't see it on the list, then add it (refer to the manual on how to add activity profiles). Once the "Hike" activity is selected press start/stop to start the activity, and after done hiking press start/stop again to stop the activity. Select "Save" to save it. That's it.

  • Sorry Andy, but I don't know how to download "a hiking app from Garman IQ Store. When I go to Connect IQ Store and search for hiking app I get several thousand apps and do not know which one to download.

  • I THINK I managed to do this. Hike now appears. I'll let you know if it works...

  • I did have to add Hike as described and now it works perfectly! Many thanks.Smiley

  • Glad it works. I prefer the Hike2+ app from the IQ store, but they largely do the same thing. Enjoy!

  • Still having problems seeing my LiveTrack in the Android App. Here's my experience today.

I started the Hike at the sidewalk outside my home to be sure it had a good view of the satellites. No track showed on the phone and didn't seem to reflect HR changes as I changed pace.  Stopped/Resume & Started fresh  a few times to see if that might fix the problem. No joy. As a result,  there were several hikes uploaded to Garmin Connect for viewing when I got home.

Apparently, the message seems to be  just Start the Hike with good view of satellites and do Stop/Save/Done when hike is over. IOW, don't worry about not seeing it in the app. Perhaps it just takes  a long time for something to show in the App.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Andy, do you think the Hike2+ app would work better in this regard?

  • One more grumble... Can I get rid of the Timer that's always running? I have no use for it and it's just one more distraction.

  • Hmm, I never tried syncing to the phone during a GPS activity. I don't think live tracking via the phone is what it is made for. It is more a hardware than software issue, so Hike2 would likely be similar. You can just use the phone alone for that. There are other watches more geared for hiking that have maps built into the watch. Also this watch does not have an altimeter. It estimates altitude (usually off a bit) from the GPS location. So yes, start, stop, save, view track in Garmin Connect offline.

You can customize the fields on the watch to show or hide a variety of features. Usually I have several I can scroll through. Select the (hike activity, down button, select activity settings<data screens and choose the number of screens you want, the number of fields per screen and then what you want each field to be. That's the nifty part of the watch.

LiveTrack is a feature which allows other people to see your progress in the current activity. This is how it works:

    1. You enable livetrack in the garmin connect mobile app, and configure it according to your preferences.

    2. Add some contacts to receive your livetrack data (you can put your own e-mail address here!).

    3. Once you start the activity all the contacts added in point 2 will receive an e-mail with a link to a website, where your activity can be seen.

    4. The link from point 3 can be opened in your favourite web browser (NOT the garmin connect mobile app).

As I said, all this is not designed to monitor your own activity on the phone, but can be used as a workaround, although with some limitations.
