Very inaccurate GPS tracking

Former Member

Hi

I'm a long time Garmin user and a couple of months ago changed from a 910XT to a 735XT. This morning I ran round Hyde Park, which I've done before with both watches without issues but this morning the 735XT GPS was way off as you can see from the image - GPS track in red and my actual track in blue. I noticed something was odd when I was running as my auto-lap times every km were varying too much.

Some notes:

  • My 735XT was about 80% charged
  • I made sure GPS was ready before I set off
  • Set to GPS+GLONASS
  • Data recording set to every second
  • 735XT software version 9.40.0.0
  • it was around 7am this morning

Anyone seen anything like this before? I don't think I ever saw anything like this with my 910XT and the 735XT is unusable if it is so far off.

Thanks

  • Hi!

I experienced something similar with my 735XT. It recorded very inaccurate tracks and stopped GPS recording from time to time at all. Please see my question about it: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-735xt/157726/incomplete-track-recording

Approximately 1.5 months ago I turned off GLONASS and it seems that 745XT at least stopped loosing GPS signal. Though, GPS tracking is still not as accurate as on my other GPS watch.

  • Just to illustrate my previous statement about GPS tracking accuracy.

Please find two tracks below. I made this training on June, 22 - 3 laps in greenwood wearing both watches.

    First image is 735XT track.

Second one is track from other GPS watch.

  • To dred:

I am not a scientist or engineer. To me, your tracks do not look like GPS, which would send you a series of independent location dots, then connect these dots with a line. Your dots are not independent. Your tracks look like cell-tower measurements, where each reported dot is merely so many feet from the last dot but is not independent of the previous or next dot. You can see that once your "GPS" got off track by perhaps reflection or line-of-sight obstacles, that it didn't recover until it was about 40% around your loop. From about 10 o'clock to 4 o'clock going counterclockwise on your map, the data do not seem like true GPS coordinates. Again, just a dumb business-school grad here.

  • My 735xt (bought in 2017) was never accurate every single use right from the start. It’s always short by 200-400m. I also use RunKeeper and my wife using Samsung watch. Rather RK and SW are consistent but Garmin is way off. Can anyone help to suggest what could be wrong pls?

    Thank you.

    Andy

  • Exactly the same for me with my 735XT. My 735XT is always under recording compared to my wife's Forerunner 35. On a 10km run, I will always be 200 to 300m short. On a longer run it just gets worse. We run together on exactly the same route, but my 735XT is always short.

I have friends that run with a 735XT and their watches seem better than mine.

I've tried everything under the sun to resolve, but nothing seems to make a difference.

  • Hi Bailey. Sharing the reply I got from Garmin thru my messenger feedback :

Hi Andy, thank you for reaching out!

May we know if you have tried adjusting your watch GPS settings to GPS + GLONASS with the following steps?

    1. Select 'Run' activity
    2. Go to settings
    3. Select 'Run settings', scroll down to 'GPS' and select 'GPS + GLONASS'

Should the problem persists, kindly contact our Garmin Call Centre at 800-8861-072 (toll-free) or email [email protected]. Our service team will be able to assist you on the issue you are facing.

Hope this helps, and let us know if you require further assistance. Thank you!

  • My 735XT is also inaccurate for running. Loses 25-40m per km compared to my old Garmin and two different phones (Strava). My old 910XT seems much more accurate and tracks my Nokia 8 (senses Gallileo GPS) very well. The tracks show the 735XT cuts off corners regularly. Garmin exchanged the 735XT for a refurb but it's equally inaccurate. Distance and pace tracking the main function I want in a watch. I will have to sell on eBay but will lose money for sure

Even running a 4km with my daughter had me running an extra 130 metres after she stopped to record 3km. Garmin exchanged the 735XT for a refurb but it's equally inaccurate. notes: tried GPS only, GPS+Glonass, let the GPS 'soak' after locking on for 4-5 mins before running, no tall buildings, not many trees, but there are a number of turns on a typical course.

very disappointing I asked Garmin if a watch that supports Gallileo in addition to GPS and Glonass would be ore accurate? But which watch FR45? FR645?

  • I received Garmin’s response to set up GPS+Glonass. Initially it was accurate. But after a week it went back to erratic recording again. Every run, I hv to cover additional 150m from the actual distance.
