How do I use an external HRM instead of the built-in optical one?

Hi, I have a Garmin HRM2-SS chest strap that I'm trying to use with my 645M.  Before starting my last two trail runs, I went to Settings->Sensors & Accessories, and the external HRM was correctly listed as an HR device and was connected.  However, at the end of the runs after syncing with the Connect app, it didn't appear in the Device section.  I've come up with a few possibilities for what's going wrong:

1. I have the Wrist Heart Rate Status set to Auto. Is this setting buggy for anyone else?  Should I set it to Off before an activity?

2. Maybe the heart rate data is actually coming from the external HRM? Is there an easy way to look at the original .fit file and see what sensor was used?

3. Is the HRM2-SS just too old?  But it uses ANT+, so it should work, according to the manual.

Or any other ideas what could be going on?  Thanks!
