Why does my Garmin map not display when I select it from Activities and Apps?

Just bought a Garnin Forerunner 55. Using the Up/Down buttons, when I select Activities and Apps, then hit the Start/Stop button, all I get is the map name, i.e. Maps4 Garmin but nothing shows anywhere. The only display that ever shows properly is the Watch Face. Can anyone kindly guide me to get a map to display?

  • Moved thread from Active Captain to Forerunner 55 forum for better visibility.

  • This app isn't supported on a 55.

AFAIK there's no way to get maps on a 55.

  • Eh? That's odd because all the paraphernalia paperwork says it supports GPS and has 3 different types of GPS apps. Nevertheless, thanks for the reply.

  • Yes, it supports GPS but doesn't display maps on the watch like other watches that have built-in mapping.

To view maps of your activity use Garmin Connect Web or the mobile app.

  • Thanks for that most helpful reply. I guess if it does not show a map of where I want to walk to, rather than connecting to the web or Mobile app see where I have already walked , then it defeats the purpose I bought this smartwatch and is thus of little or no use to me and will return it to where I bought it from. That comparison screenshot you included was most helpful.

If you get a watch that at least has the course guidance feature, that might be all you need. Full-blown maps are nice, but maybe not mandatory.

Course Guidance is a feature available on many Garmin devices that helps you navigate custom-built courses. You'll have turn-by-turn directions, and a breadcrumb track that will show your current position on the course. The 165 and 265 have this, as well as many other Garmin watches. Just not on the Forerunner 55.

This video shows someone using the course guidance feature on a Forerunner 265. At 2:19 he shows the course track he's following.

  • Good Morning. Once more, I am indebted to you for such fantastic advice. Originally, I had been after a Garmin Fenix 7 Solar during the recent Black Friday sales, but then when I investigated the plethora of features it had, for that kind of outlay, it was not worth me getting, as I'd never use 90% of what it offered. So, then turned my eyes to the Garmin Instinct 2x Solar in red, but again, missed out the Black Friday deal. In the end, decided to lower my sights to the Forerunner 55, which now turns out be not-so-good-a-buy!!

Hopefully, I can  get a Refund and go for one of the models you have pointed to to do the job for me. Once again incredible advice. Many thanks!

  • Does the 165 and 265 have a swipe face rather than the cumbersome, fiddly buttons to access different menu items on the Forerunner 55?

  • Yes, they both have a touchscreen in addition to 5 physical buttons. Here's a good video that compares the Forerunner 55, 165, and 265.

  • Thanks  to your great and appreciated help, have returned that Foreunner55. A friend in the gym showed me his 60th birthday present Fenix 7 Pro and am going to go for that post-Christmas euphoria as I may get a Boxing Day Sale bargain. Been a learning curve for me, and you have gone a long way to 'teach' me. Thanks!
