Forerunner 45 sudden decreased battery life

My girlfriend and I both have a Forerunner 45 and have both noticed a sudden drop in battery life since the last update. I don't remember exactly when, but we both noticed that especially during activities with GPS enabled, the battery drains incredibly fast. We hiked for about 45 minutes yesterday and my battery went from 40% to 1%. I used to be able to ride my bike to work for two days (30-40min one way trip). The result is that we both have to charge our watches once every 2-3 days. I worry that I can no longer track our longer, multiple hour hikes with this watch.

If this were happening to just my own watch, I would suspect the battery is dying and I need to replace my watch soon, but since it is happening to both our watches at exactly the same time, I suspect that something changed during the last update. However, I have not found anything that would explain the battery drain. Do other people have the same experience?

  • Similar issue with Forerunner 55 after the most recent update

  • Same here with my Forerunner 55, after the latest update

  • Yea - my battery life is minimal with the GPS on...... actually cant really track anything with it any more....v frustrating.

  • I have the same problem (also Forerunner 45). I understand that the battery is getting worse by time, but this is like the capacity of battery dropped rapidly in few days. And the problem is only when i use gps (when i work out at home, it keeps the capacity as same as before). But with GPS, terrible.

Today my watch showed me i have about 30-40 percent of battery and they switched off after 900 m of run.

  • Is there a solution to this issue? I'm experiencing the same problem with my Forerunner 55—during activity with GPS enabled, the battery drains at a rate of about 1-1.5% per minute.

  • I think it has something to do with the heart rate monitoring. Bear with me: at the end of last year my son was born. We had to stay in the hospital for about a week and at the neonatology department, my girlfriend and I had to remove our watches and jewelry for hygienic purposes. I feared my watch would run or of power soon, as I forgot to bring the charger, but it easily made it through the entire week, being in my jeans pocket for about half of the time.

This made me wonder: what was different to the watch and I can only imagine it stopped taking my heart rate. I think I remember a setting to adjust the interval of heart rate measurements of you were not recording an activity, but it seems to have disappeared? That would help, as I don't need continuous monitoring during daily chores, time in the office or in bed.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I haven't changed anything in my daily use of the watch, and the battery performs as usual throughout the day. The issue only occurs when I start an activity with GPS enabled.
