Expected battery life

I bought a 2nd hand Forerunner 55 to my son. He used it for a couple of days, with ~ 1 hour of gps activity per day and the Big Easy CIQ watchface (the one I also use on my fr965) and he gets only 2 days of battery life. Is this what's expected? I mean I don't know how long the previous owner used it but given it was released only 3 years ago I would've expected more.

  •  Sounds strange. Mine is running 10-14 days with limited activities and connected to phone with messages etc.

  • He's using only the watch. I mean he doesn't carry a phone with him. Can that cause higher battery consumption? Can I change the settings to make it better (I wouldn't unpair the phone, as we still do daily sync with the phone)

  • No it's not my impression that it could use more without the phone connected. I would try to use an original watchface though as there have been many frustrations in the community regarding battery life and a bad device / watchface combination.

  • Yeah I'll try that. I downloaded a watchface to the fr55 that I use on my fr965 for half a year, but maybe it is a bit different on fr55.

  • I am using my FR55 mostly without using the GPS, but connected to my phone to get notifications. I also have a Watch Face installed and I get 3 weeks of use before I feel the need to recharge it again. When I do so, there usually still is ±10% of battery life left. My watch is roughly 2 1/2 years old and in daily use.

Something definitely does not sound right with that FR55's battery life.

  • This is strange: I switched it to use one of the built-in watch faces. Now I don't see the battery level on the face, so I installed a widget. After 12 hours it still displays 100% which at 1st made me happy, but then I thought there might be some issue with the widget, 'cause it makes no sense that after half a day it still has 100% Too good to be true... I hope it won't turn itself off suddenly. I'll keep updated.

  • 1. Does the battery indicator within the Connect IQ App reflect the same battery level as the watch? If not, there might be something off with the custom watch face.

    2. I'm not entirely sure but is the phone that's paired to the watch out of range for a significant period of time? If so, the watch might be expending battery just looking for the phone (not sure it turns off automatically after some time). You could try turning Bluetooth off manually when you don't need it and see if that helps.(this doesn't forget the device)

    3. Another possibility not yet mentioned is that it's searching/using the GPS somehow while not in an activity(or the GPS activity is running without it being noticed), though I think this is unlikely. (See this comment)

  • 1. What do you mean by battery indicator in the Connect IQ app? There's a feature request fir that fir about 2 years, but never heard that it was implemented, nor do I see it now.

Basically the problem was solved by switching to a built-in watchface. Now I can tell that after 5 full days with some activities the battery is 55% so in a way it even performs better than what I expected.

Next mission is to find a CIQ watchface that is digital and allows some customisation and does go on in a fr55 for at least 5 days.

  • I'm happy with the "Retro Quartz Digital"

(although I am if an age that it doesn't feel "retro", just normal!)
