Wrist HRM Garmin 55reads too high even when I remove it from wrist when I'm walking

Got new Garmin 55 as had HRM problems with very old Garmin. Yesterday went for walk. Wrist monitor showed always 65 bbm or less when I'm sure bbm of heart was around 85. Paired with chest monitor today and went fro run. Seemed accuratish when I paused to take pulse. This afternoon went for walk just using wrist monitor- it showed 140 wish readings when pulse was around 90. I stopped measuring and re started it - it again showed 140 wish. so I took watch off wrist thinking this would stop it's facility for measuring- 10 minutes later it's still showing 140 ish even though I'm standing chatting. What do I do? An accurate HRM is very very important to me given my age and history.
