Forerunner 45S GPS issues

Hi...

Purchased a Foreunner 45S in April 2020. From the start the connection to GPS was poor and inconsistent. Sometimes it would connect, but generally after 5 minutes still no connection so would start running. Did not make any difference if clear day or overcast, buildings or not, trees or open, Glonass or Galileo. Husband has a 235 so was familiar with how fast connection normally happens.

Contacted Garmn who advised reset to be done. Completed, okay for a run or two then back to problems. Reset a few times, turned on / off. Still poor connection. Comparing to partners 235, the inaccuracy was about 50-100m per kilometre.

To Garmins credit, they took watch back and replaced within three days. First run this morning with new watch....same problem.

Has anyone had poor connection to GPS with 45S? If so, how did you fix?

  • Same story here.  Won't acquire GPS and if you start a run without it, it will record the run within Garmin connect but cuts off the first two miles when uploaded to Strava.  Usually at roughly the same location on the map.  Will try some of the tips here but very disappointed that Garmin is not addressing this issue.

  • I'm having the same issue.  Mine was a present for my birthday in May and was fine to start with but recently becoming more of a pain.  Yesterday, had on for an hour and still hadn't connected, ran for over 30 minutes and didn't get a GPS fix for any of it!

I really don't want to have to mess about every time I want to record an activity.

  • I have a Garmin 45 (stated as refurbished, but I am not sure about it...the box was damaged) which received last week. It came already with firmware 3.90 and I am comparing it with my old suunto ambit 3 (which is known to be pretty accurate).

It seems I am the only one without issues?
In fact the tracks are accurate (comparing with Suunto Ambit 3). I don't run with mobile phone.

    having read this https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/02/tech-tidbits-garmin-gps-offsets-again-and-powertap-units-discontinued.html

I left the unit acquiring gps outdoors for a good 30min before my first run.
    No issues.
The only thing I notice is that it takes more time for gps to be ready compared to the suunto.
    I am using GPS only.

For those with issues I would try:
    Install latest firmware
    Reset
    Sync with garmin express/garmin connect
Start activity and let the watch outdoor for about 15-30min to have good gps fix
    Go for a Run/Walk

If it is not fixed, send it to warranty.

    Hope to have helped.

  • Yep - Same issue. First couple of times out the door and it took a few seconds then each subsequent time it takes longer and longer and longer... Now I can finish my walk before it even finds the satellites. I'm 1 walk away from tossing in the trash where it belongs... Seems like they work just well enough until the return date has passed... What a POS.

  • Same issue. Garmin doesn’t seem to care. Class action lawsuit might be what it takes,

This worked for me. See thread and response from Garmin-Brooks - Waiting for GPS for too long

If still no joy suggest reaching out directly to Garmin Support (chat or call for faster service).

  • While this works for me as well, I have to do it over and over again every week or so. And it's so annoying!

  • Buy another brand, maybe they will learn it by this instead of give us good support...

  • I have exactly the same issue with my Forerunner 45S. I bought it after using the Garmin Forerunner 310XT happily for years and although it was like running with an orange brick strapped to your arm it was way better at acquiring GPS than the latest Garmin products. This is going straight back to Amazon!

Même problème, je l’ai acheté en mai 2021... ils n’ont rien réglé!
