How/if to use FR265, Edge 540 and chest strap at the same time?

Most of my activities are running and cycling.  I got an Edge 540 about 8 months ago and have been using it with chest strap for each cycling activity (without out wearing any Garmin watch).  For my runs I was using a FR245 and I would only wear the watch during the run, not all day or during sleep.

But recently I got a FR265 for additional functions like lactate threshold, HRV, body battery, training readiness, etc.  For some of these features, it is recommended to wear the watch 24/7, which I have been mostly doing.

But out of habit I did a ride yesterday with just my Edge 540 and of course that left a data hole during that time period for things like body battery since I was not wearing my FR265.

So my question is am I supposed to keep wearing the FR265 during a cycling activity even though I am using the Edge 540 for the cycling activity?  Which unit will connect to the chest strap?  Are there any settings on either device that I need to setup so they play well together during a cycling activity?

When I set up my FR265 it was made my primary wearable and training device.  Could just use a little advice on what to do in this situation.

  • Short answer.  Yes.  You need to wear the 265 while cycling to get the full picture.  The watch and HRM and 540 all work together to give you a full body battery/exertion picture.

I found this out like you did.  I would take my 265 off because I figured the 1030+ was getting all the information.  Turns out it was not.  For a full picture of exertion I needed to wear the 265 as well.

This is just my experience though.  So now I wear the 265, the HRM, and the 1030+ when riding.
