Garmin 265 update 27.09 trouble

I bought a fr265 a week ago, and it was working fine.

Yesterday, the watch downloaded the 27.09 update and turned into a brick.

The GPS is not working, the sleep tracking is not working, and the wrist heart rate is either working or not working. The watch is slowing down, and the battery has gone from 86% to 9% overnight.

Does anyone know how to roll back the firmware? Or how to install the old firmware? And where can I download the old firmware?

The watch is now just a watch. Help!

  • Have you tried a full reset?

It's easy to roll back, but for some reason Garmin doesn't want to supply old firmware, which is frustrating. They've left many people stranded with broken watches.

How did you update, via the phone app or usb cable + Garmin Express? If you used Express then the gupdate.gsp / gupdate.gcd file might still be on your computer. If you find it then copy it to the Garmin folder on the watch and also make an empty file force.tmp and the watch should prompt for to install it when it's unplugged.

If someone manages to find the firmware please share it. It seems like it will be up to users to help each other, until Garmin decides to share old firmware.

  • Based on general problems observed in the past, if sensors aren't working, I'd shoot for a firmware reinstall 1st

Settings, system, about then 8 pushes of the light button should bring up the reinstall option.

If that doesn't work, I's shoot for a power down restart

If that doesn't work then it's something of a toss up, hope for another update, or try the full on system reset which looses the user settings / profile and any activities. You can  copy the activities directly from the activity folder in the watch using a USB cable, just like any thumb drive.

I don't believe the update copies out the old gupdate.gcd file, but it's been a while since I allowed the watch to perform an update, it's not impossible that it's changed .Every update that comes out has the same file name, date of the file would be a clue, I've looked inside the files and the actual revision number is on the inside.

From my observations many of actual failure problems have been solved from the above, which is different than does the function perform properly. My HR sensor went missing after an update (I allowed to happen), a firmware reinstall brought it back to life but that doesn't mean the information it produced after the update was satisfactory, but then it wasn't satisfactory before the update:|

  • I've tried everything, but it didn't work. I need the old firmware version for Fr265. Do you know where I can get it?

  • If you used Express to do the update while the watch was plugged in then it might still be on your computer. Search for gupdate.gsp / gupdate.gcd

The folder it's in should tell you which version it is. You can copy that to the Garmin folder on the watch and also an empty file called force.tmp and when you unplug the watch it should ask to install the update.

  • The short answer is no. I've looked for an archive but not found one, I'd be happy to know if one existed.

It wouldn't be a bad move to contact Garmin Support, especially if true if your watch is still under warranty. I doubt they will supply an old firmware version (they didn't for me and my FR245) but they might offer another remedy. Garmin's official policy of insanity is not to allow people to roll back, unless you're in the Beta Program and then you can roll back to the last official released version.

I have 21.20 and how that happened is that when I had my watch connected to Garmin express on the PC, even though I had software updates turned off on the watch, just by opening express, it downloaded and transferred 21.20 to my watch in the background. When I disconnected from the USB cable, the watch asked me if I wanted to update Now, or Later? Later thank you. I Killed Express, hooked the USB cable up and cut and pasted the GUPDATE.GSP file from the Garmin folder on the watch to archive it the PC. That stopped the update, I wasn't ready to allow an update to happen, though I did eventually allow 21.20. Garmin Espress only runs on the old PC now, no accidents. 21.20 is where I remain, hoping that someday Garmin will actually fix the HR sensor processing and I can once again allow an update.  I had a reason at the time, so I took the chance on 21.20. The update fixed some small thing, didn't help the HR processing.

  •   Interesting. I plugged my watch in Garmin express on my mac and did a sync. but version 27.10 did not update.  I am still stuck on the buggy 27.09.

There is a poster in another thread who is claiming that he as v27.10 too.  My hope is some, perhaps  is listening and will speak with tech support to get version 27.10 pushed out.  Fingers crossed.
