Is it possible to turn off the adaptive coach ?

Hello,

6+ months ago I did prepare a half marathon with coach Amy with the goal of a sub 1h40. The training was great and I did 1h35.

Now I am preparing another half marathon with a sub 1h30 goal and I created a new training program but i was not able to pick a coach...

The program is also "adaptive" now so depending on my sleep and other activities I guess.

The problem is that I like to go for a swim during my rest days for exemple or go for a slow social run with friends when not focusing on my training.

The problem is that Garmin is then auto adjusting my training program.

For instance, today I was suppossed to do interval training to work on my speed and Vo2 Max but because I did a slow run with friends yesterday (rest day) Garmin thinks that I am totally exhausted and changed my interval training into a slow 30 minutes run which OBVIOUSLY won't helf in any way to reach my goal...

It is now my 7th week into a 20 week program and I feel like I'm not making progress, on the contrary, now I am loosing fitness due to the new coach giving me BS training plans...

Is it possible to turn off the adaptive coach and go back to a coach Amy type of training ?

  • Hi.  I do not have a solution to your query (sorry!).  But I am interested in Coach Amy.  Is this a Garmin coach that is included with my watch?  Or is this a third party coach that you have hired and who is sync'ing workouts with your watch?  Thank you.

  • Hello,

Until recently when you set up a coaching program on the App Garmin Connect (that is free with your watch) you could select a coach "Amy" or another one. You tell your goal for exemple : finish a half marathon in 1h40 in 20 weeks and it would set up a training program for you telling you which day to run or to rest and it would also wary between interval runs, long runs etc. It helped me achieve my objectives.

Recently they updated their training program and deleted coach Amy to replace it with an adaptive program that would adapt to your sleep schedule, other activities etc.

I wanted to train the same way for my next race but the new coach is horrible and only suggests me short slow runs apparently which, from my experience will not make me achieve my goal...

So if you are looking for a training program, I would try Runna from Strava or Campus maybe. They can sync to your watch and suggest training sessions.

  • Ah,  ok.  Thank you very much for getting back to me.  I have not used any of the Garmin coaching features but I can see useful they would be for training for marathons.  Hopefully Garmin is able to fix your issue.
