Forerunner 265s elevation gain and floors climb issue

I am having some elevation gain and floors climb issue in the last 2 months. I noticed it in early December. It might have happened after a software update but I am not sure which one.

If you look at the floor climbs graph above, you can see that starting in December, the stats just went crazy. There are days that when I am walking around the same floor at work and my watch will notify me that I climbed 10x floors. This never happened before December.

Here is the weekly stat. There is no way I climbed 300 floors in the week of December 6 - 12. My weekly average for the whole year was around 100 and it was very consistent.

Here are three runs that I did around my neighborhood which is completely flat. It is so flat that there should not be any elevation. The first two were in Jan 2024 and April 2024. I am ok with having 10m or so elevation error. The third run was in Jan 2025. It recorded a 42m elevation gain. This error is unacceptable at all. This happened to all my runs starting in December 2024. I ran the same route almost every time but the elevation gain could range from 20m to 60m. I thought this might go away after some software updates but it is still happening as of my last run on Jan 14, 2025. Has anyone experience similar issue? I am hoping this is a software issue but now I am thinking if this is a hardware issue because my coworker has the same watch and her watch doesn't have this issue.

  • That thing with the floors can happen on days with a lot wind. Maybe also the elevation. My 265s has also problems with elevation. I always come back several meters below, although it's the point where I started. Or I went down 23m during sitting in my living room, no barometer change. Garmin told me that this behavior is normal and within the range... And yes, at least my 265 that I bought because of the larger display shows a similar behavior.

  • This is happening to me and is driving me absolutely mad. I will be working from home (a flat with no stairs) and walking to make a cup of coffee my watch will register that I’ve climbed 10 flights. On runs the elevation is sky rocketing at the start of them, even when the routes are very flat. I have contacted garmin but heard nothing yet. I will try the reset suggested, I can’t seem to find the sensor to clean, but based on other posts I’m not holding out much hope!

  • You can find the sensor at 6 o'clock position after you removed the strap.

  • I have now cleaned it - still the same, it register another 10 flights after I walked back to my desk. I've also now reset the altimeter.

  • Window open and wind outside? Air condition? Here is a supermarket where the watch registers a lot of floors when I'm walking around.

  • Nope - based on other posts I've seen I don't think it is anything to do with wind or air conditioning. Like the person that posted this it happens every day and on every run, whatever the conditions.

  • This must be a bug, because my Garmin Forerunner 265 has the last couple of months registred floor climbing like never before! I can walk on flat ground and the watch registers it as floor climbing.

  • So I ended up chatting with Garmin on their website a couple times. First time, they suggested a few troubleshooting tips. Something like adding the elevation data field on your run activity, start a workout, pause it, resume it, power the watch off, power the watch on, and resume it again. Do not know who came up with these ridiculous steps and obviously it did not work for me. So I chatted with them again, they ended up sending me a replacement watch and told me to ship them back the old one.

  • Also forgot to mention, after receiving the replacement watch. Everything went back to normal. So it seems like it is a hardware issue. For reference, I purchased the watch in Sep 2023. The replacement watch is free as long as I return the old watch. I paid a deposit so they can ship the replacement watch out immediately and they provided me a return label to ship back the old watch. They will refund the deposit when they receive the old watch. Another option was to ship the old watch back first and they will send the replacement once they receive the old watch. This way you do not need to pay a deposit but you will not have your watch for a week or two.

  • Sigh! I’m I was hoping it’s a software issue. I’ll have to try your suggestion and clean my clock. But I think Iit won’t work…

Glad for your sake that the support was so helpful.
