Does the recovery time re-set after each workout?

Example: my recovery time said 18 hours and I went for a 1.5 mile walk. Recovery time is now 0 hours. Did it re-set based on the walk? How did I recover 18 hours in 30 min? My training readiness also shot up from a 68 to 82 from before the walk to after.

  • No, recovery time doesn't reset after each workout. The recovery time is based on the peak-EPOC of your past activities and your overall level of activity, and the time-decay is non-linear. Physiological readings (stress, rest, sleep, activities) impact the on-going recovery.

It is not usual to see changes in recovery time during the day, but 18hours is indeed a bit much. I don't think there is anything to worry about: this is not a very precise metric. As long as you are in the green recovery bar/stage, it means you can train normally.

If you don't train a lot, a more intense session will push up the recovery needs more than if you train a lot.

  • It did the same thing today. Did my usual CrossFit training from 5am - 7am. Training readiness went from 76 down to 50 and recovery time said "18 hours." Went for my 1.5 mile walk w/ the dog at 10am and recovery time now says "0 hours" and training readiness went back up to 76 (what it was when I woke up).

Also, I am not "worried" about it. Just curious. I take the metrics with a grain of salt anyway and do not typically change my training based on any Garmin metrics/factors. Just a weird thing that it would basically re-set after a casual walk.

  • What is your typical weekly training load?

Do you wear a chest strap during your CrossFit?

  • I do. It's typically around 1100

  • Alright then, this is a pretty good level of training load therefore an additional typical activity is unlikely to have an outsized temporary effect on the training load. Maybe an unusual high load activity would, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I cannot rationalize the big change from 18h to zero. I have seen drops of maybe 12h on my watch at the maximum.

  • Yeah, that's why I thought maybe the recovery time is only based on the most recent activity, therefore it just bases it on what I need to recover from the casual walk, ha. Seems odd, and I do not believe it was like this before, seems to have started doing that recently.
