Floor counting discrepancies

I have noticed several discrepancies in the floor counter (flight of stairs counter) on this watch (Forerunner 265S).

1. The tally on the watch often doesn't match the tally in Garmin Connect, even after syncing several times. At times, the watch will buzz and throw me a party for hitting my goal number of flights. Yet Garmin Connect says I didn't make my goal for the day (even the next morning, after it has synced several times). Which is it? Did I hit it or not?

2. Both tallies (on the watch and in the app) are way too low. By my count, I often hit as many as 13 or 15 flights up and down in a single day, while the watch maxes out at 5 (throwing me a party) and the app says only 4 (didn't hit goal). Since I carry my iPhone around in my pocket at all times, and have done for years, I can say that the iPhone historically tends to read low as well, but not by nearly so much as the watch. The watch is much, much, much too low for what I did for the day. Why is it so much worse than the iPhone? Why does Garmin market this watch as having a flight counter that's so far off from reality? I would be better off without the watch and just counting in my head all the time. Glad I relied on the marketing materials for a feature that's worse than nothing.

3. How can the number of flights down and the number of flights up not match for the day? I don't have an elevator in my house. Every staircase that I take down, I take up. That's how I end up back in my bed each night. The numbers should be exactly equal every day for most people, in most situations.

  • I do some floors climbing activities.

    1) I did check my watch and GC web app. Their floors climb tally for the week.

    2) Yup my floors count are lower than actual too. This is probably because of the height of each floor to floor defined by Garmin. Our residential buildings are about 3m height. Garmin may have a different height configured.

    3) Pressure may not be constant throughout the day
