Data from OHR is recorded while using a chest strap

This issue used to come up from time to time on all Garmin watches I've had over the years. A soft reset (rebooting the watch by long-pressing the button in the top-left corner) usually helped for a while, but not anymore with FR 265.

I'm now on FW 18.22, and whatever I do (reboot the watch, soft-reset the watch, change the strap, change the connection of the strap from ANT+ to BLE) - nothing helps. The watch uses OHR to record HR data. This is obvious during Strength Rowing activities where I'm getting readings in 60-80 range (probably, the OHR is unable deal with wrist movement). The OHR continues flashing after the start of the activity too - not a good sign.

I have to manually turn off OHR each time before I start any activity now. It's not that difficult, but unnecessary. Thanks for help

  • I had issue similar issues when using an arm strap (Verity Sense). It would alternate between showing the watch heart rate, the strap heart rate and nothing (“—“). I had the arm strap on the opposite arm to the watch and was using ANT+. It worked fine for indoor activities, but not outdoors. The solution was to 1) Update firmware on strap 2) Switch off ANT+ on the strap (and delete ANT+ connection on watch) 3) Pair strap to watch using BLE.

Now works great for both indoor and outdoor activities and matches the Apple Watch (which is also connected to the same strap using BLE)…

  • Thanks, tried removing all straps I have (Wahoo over ANT+ and separately over BLE and HRM Tri over ANT+), connected them again one by one - nothing changed. OHR stays on after the launch of the activity despite a connected strap. The only practical workaround yet - switching off wrist HR manually in the settings. Getting used to it... Disappointed

I don't have any updatable firmware on my straps, they are too old for this.

  • OHR staying on is a new "functionality" Garmin introduced a few betas ago and Garmin rep commented that it had to do with new features that are to be introduced.  Really irritating as one has no idea what is happening , and there are so many posts of HR OHR related issues also currently. Sad really!

  • Same post as others in as many days.. can Garmin take a look at this issue? It's really frustrating!

  • Thank you, read the article, tried leaving OHR on during my Strength activity today, and it worked! The watch picked up HR from the strap, not from the OHR.

They may have done this a while ago, I just interpreted it as a usual glitch so switched off OHR manually every time I noticed it was on upon the start of the activity.

  • Thank you for that post which is insightful
