Is it possible to combine an outdoor running workout (eg below 140 HR) and a specific course?

I set up a running workout (a 5 minute warmup followed by a 2 hour run with custom heart rate range between 120 and 135 hr) as well as a half marathon route by hand in Connect. I selected the run workout and then the course before starting a run. The workout stopped after the warmup! The course directions, however, continued to work perfectly. I just had to keep looking at the watch to check whether my heart rate was still in range.

Is it possible to correctly combine workout and course? Should I perhaps set up the run workout differently?

That being said, it would be nice if the Browser version of Connect could allow one to edit a course... The map shows up briefly and then the page goes blank. The iPhone app works nicely however, so I set up the course on my PC and modify it if necessary on the phone.
