is the garmin heart rate monitor any better on the forerunner 265 versus forerunner 945?

I currently own a F945. Fairly happy with it .. except for the wrist heart rate monitor.  I find it somewhat inconsistent (can be way too high .. or too low for the activity at hand).  I do own a chest strap but sometimes choose not to wear it during workout.

I'm considering upgrading to a F265 .. but would want to know if the HR technology/hardware is any better/different on the F265 vs F945.

Thank you.

  • From my point of view this is not a new problem. The only difference between my old fenix 6 pro is that the increase comes much more suddenly so that it is now immediately recognizable. I've seen such increases to the actual step rate for many years, especially when i am 'only' walking/hiking, but they were hidden in a slower rise so that it was not obvious (but clearly visible when comparing the hr manually the 'classic' way with fingers and a stopwatch.

  • Wrist HR on my 265 is fine most of the time but every once in a while it will lock to cadence like any other similar product. There is no way around it. it is a limitation of this technology.

If you need reliable data a chest strap is the only way keeping in mind that one can fail too in some specific scenarios

  • I just got the fr265 as a replacement to the fr935. The wrist HR is horrendous. I literally am standing still during a cardio workout and it says 150+. Considering this post was from 2023, Garmin obviously hasn’t done anything about it. Guess I’m not surprised. They don’t seem to do much of anything about the glitches. Programmers just keep changing unimportant stuff

  • They did try something but so far very little progress has been made.
Keep in mind wrist HR will never ever be good enough for high intensity training.
Some of the reasons are explained here https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=xQwjQjzUew4BF1GYcusE59

Get a chest strap and use the built in sensor purely for detecting hr during sleep.

  • if it would be just so easy... The built in sensor is used for all of the measurements during the day when there is no activity started. And yes, even when walking in the city i could observe that the FR is locking sometimes to the step rate. So the overall load of the day that garmin tries to calculate from the HR is inaccurate and so all the calculations based on that.
If i wouldn't know my HR and its behaviour very good i wouldn't have recognized this, and i am shure, many of the people around do not regognize that they have a huge bulk of false data allover the day. This is why it is so important that even wrist HR is doing its job.

  • Just to chime back in, I did acquire the FR 265 and the HR/wrist is (marginally) better than the 945. But as it has been stated in this thread, wearing a chest strap is the only way one can get any gleam of hope toward accuracy

  • The chest strap helps, however, I have both the basic and the pro. There are differences between the two and how they record. At least I've seen a difference.
